Day 5: Friday October 11th 1996

Sange to Tal, Manang 1675 metres

Walked to Jagat at 1314 metres, uphill for an hour, and on to cross the river again (another suspension bridge) to Chamje for lunch. Walked into a different environment to-day. Left the rice fields behind. A lot of climbing, going down to the river and climbing back up again. The valley has narrowed, more rock in the mountains. Some corn grown on the sides of the mountains.

girl carrying baby Enterd the Manang district to-day. Mostly Tibetans here, you can see the change in the features of the people. At noon stopped at Chamje [1311m -1433m] There was a group of children, one little girl about 4 or 5 with a smaller child in a shawl on her back. Beautiful children.

Walked through the area where they have cut away the side of the mountain to make a path to travel more safely on. Used to have to walk around this area on bamboo bridges attached to the outside of the rock. I would never have been able to do that I think. Ram watched us closely as it was straight down to the roaring river. Not too bad as the path was wide. Crossed another long suspension bridge. This is very hard for me with my phobia for heights. Just kept my eyes on where I was walking and concentrated on the other side. Met the Americans again, some friendly Germans, the Namaste group, a Canadian girl from Alberta.

Tal,Manang 1675 metres Oct 11th Climbed hard this afternoon. Stopped at Tal, Manang. The river forms a small lake and a little flat area. Staying at the Mountain View Hotel. Most of the trekkers have gone on to another spot. This one is quite nice. Some of the guides seem to like to hang around Ram and Hari, joking and singing with us. Nema has a strong musical voice. These are the same ones we visited with last night.

The scenery is incredible, like nothing else I have seen. We are getting higher and the mountains are steeper and harsher. Looks like a few pine or spruce trees on the ridges. Marigolds grow wild in this area. Saw some beautiful red [about 6 petals], sedum like flowers on the side of the trail. Marijuana also grows wild here.

make shift dining room Had dinner in a make shift dining room [a bedroom]. French couple from Paris (Caroline and Luc) joined us. I sprang for the Raski. Ram, Hari and Dawa the guide with the French couple shared it with us. 80 RS for the bottle of Raski. They sang and we tried to join in. Hari demonstrated a local dance. These guys are full of life, lots of laughs and fun. They also like their Raski. Had a good sleep.
