Day 7: Sunday October 13th 1996

Danagu to Chame 2713m

Had a good breakfast, eggs, chapati with jam and black tea. Walked through woods similar to Ontario, pine and maple . Climbed over landslide (last years and maybe some from this year) Rocky peaks above the tree line.

Saw Annapurna II early this morning and later this afternoon, surrounded us later in the day. Climbing hard to-day, tired. We are getting higher and the altitude is starting to take effect. Pauline feels she is getting a cold, but no symptoms of AMS.

Chame Oct.13th.Tibetan villages gateways. Saw first prayer wheels to-day in Chame. Arrived in Chame around 1400 hrs. Crossed another suspension bridge to get to the hotel. It was not long and I didn't mind it. We need the rest and time to acclimatize. Ram is very careful about going slowly.

We stayed at the Sangso Guest House. We heard that a young Danish guy had to come back down because of AMS. It doesn't matter what your age or condition, you can still get acute mountain sickness if you don't acclimatize properly. The altitude affects everyone differently.

We are sitting in the dining room having a beer, 125 rs for a large bottle. The river is right behind us roaring away. The cliffs are all around us. I washed some clothes in a bucket of cold water, hope they dry by morning.

I went to the hot springs. A huge rock face over hangs the path. This could be dangerous to your life. A rock could come down anytime. It is unreal people build their houses and live under these rock faces. Walking was a little difficult as I had my flip flops and my skirt on. It feels so good to get out of pants. Same ones every day. Jeannette from Holland, Jean Luc and girlfriend, and the guy from Israel were at the hot springs. ( the Namaste group) and Tassie the guide plus others I did not know. Put my feet in, the water is really hot. Jeannette said other people had gone in their underwear so I did too. I gradually lowered myself in. Very hot. Only stayed in a short time. A bit apprehensive as people were washing clothes, themselves etc. Put on my blouse and skirt, removed my wet underwear and came back to the hotel. Really hot water felt good. Went to bath house and washed some more. Didn't know it was the hotels next door.

Put long underwear on under skirt and blouse and goretex coat. The weather gets windy and cold once the sun goes down

We order our supper when we arrive, usually writing the order in a book. Kitchen next door. They don't use chimneys so the room gets very smoky.

Walked up the street. Prayer wheels at entrance to another area, another gate. Two of the prayer wheels were made from Red Cow milk cans. Cabbage growing in rocky soil. Huge rock face overhanging hotels. Women wrapping babies in shawls and carrying them on their backs as they work. Little girl picking up dishes asked Pauline for a Kleenex. Her nose was running. Up in this cold atmosphere this is common.

For supper had apple pie and cabbage momo. Very good. Some Spanish people in the dining room heard we were Canadians. They knew about Quebec wanting to separate from Canada and one of them was a Basque. They have wanted to separate from Spain for a very long time.

Didn't sleep well. Maybe too much food and the altitude.
