METAL DETECTING XLT PROGRAMS

TO SOME OF MY FAVORITE XLT PROGRAMS
Posted by Coinist
If you just want to coinshoot in a newer area and you are not afraid of m=
issing some jewelry or indian heads etc. Take your favorite preset prog=
ram or your own program and set the discrimination to accept (+ 15 thru +=
25) that will get most nickels (outside of the siver war nickels) and a=
shot at a gold ring. Then accept (+70 thru (+94 or +95)). This will get=
copper pennies, dimes, quarters, halves, and dollars. With these setting=
s you won't have to dig very much junk as it elminates bottle caps, tabs,=
zinc pennies, and other things (good and bad!). But remember for every p=
iece of junk that you discriminate out you take the chance on discriminat=
ing out a good target. This is a setting I use when I go coinshooting at =
one of the newer schools or parks and don't want to dig much trash. You c=
an modify these settings to your own liking and have fun playing with you=
r XLT at the same time. That's the only way to learn. =

Silver Coin Program
The following XLT program was posted on July 04, 1997 by Carolyn (ohio)
Since many of the parks would be crowded today with holiday activities I =
decided to detect in my local fairgrounds, where the county
fair was held last week. I have been there a few times and usually found =
about $1 worth of clad coins and silver ones were rare. After
getting a little over $2 and spending several hours I was about ready to =
quit when my XLT registered about 87 and depth of 3.5
inches. When I dug the signal disappeared, so I enlarged the hole to see =
that wonderful glint of silver. What a nice surprise to dig up a
Liberty Walking half in XF condition. Using my custom program I found an =
AU 1964 Roosevelt, so I felt my program was worth
continuing. Shortly after I dug up the half I walked over to another sect=
ion of the fairgrounds and found a $5 bill. With Miss Liberty
and Mr. Lincoln's portrait tucked in my pocket what a nice way to celebra=
te a patriotic day.Total coins without the $5 was $4.26.
Here are the specs if you want to try your luck. =
Target vol 53
Audio Threshold
Audio Freq. 228
AC Sensitivity 72
DC Sensitivity 30
Backlight 0
Viewing Angle 25. SAT Speed 4
Autotrac Speed 8
Offset 0
Block edit accept +l9 to +94
Reject -95 to +18 and +95. Recovery speed 24 (if not trashy go down =
to 20
Bottlecap Reject 2
VDI Sensitivity 85
Fade Rate 9
Transmit frequency 4
Preamp Gain as high as 11,not lower than 5
Have the following items on: Audio disc, Autotrac,Tone ID, VCO,Modul=
ation, Trac Inhibit, Visual Disc, D.C.Phase, Graph
Averaging, Graph accumulating, Transmit Boost.
All other items not listed are Off.
When I search am using a 6" coil and Koss Pro Headphones. I feel the key =
to my success is use of the smaller coil, which does nicely
in manuevering around trash, although the site today was fairly clean. I =
feel tone ID is very important. Just go slowly and listen for the
high tones. And the DC Phase has been a key in decision whether or not to=
dig. Good luck and let me know if you have luck using
these numbers. =

To all users of the XLT. I have been asked in my seminars, in E-Mail, on =
the phone and just when out hunting, if there are any "secret" or "specia=
l" programs I use, and to share what they are.
We all know the XLT has a very, very wide range of adjustments.
Because t=
hey are there, it seems logical to many that they must be played with and=
that it will be no problem to "bump up the performance" or the "get grea=
t depth" or to "find silver coins only." But to many of us, we know bette=
r.
We know you aren't going to find only silver, or that if you
accept only the higher numbers you will not lose silver.
I have esitated =
posting any programs simply because I do NOT want to suggest that they ar=
e "magic", nor do I want anyone to think that the programs are infallable=
=2E Most of all, I DO NOT want this to be interpreted as a back-patting s=
ession or to be taken in a wrong light. Therefore I hope all will read th=
e following prior to scrambling to experiment with a new program.
COMMENTS ON THE XLT: I firmly believe it is an excellent detector, with a=
lot of potential, but may have been designed with too much adjustment ra=
nge in several of the available features. It is too easy to get it messed=
up.
To make a program that appears to work great on a table top, but sti=
nks in the field.
I also believe that White's did a good job in setting up thier factory pr=
ograms.
Remember, most of us are coin hunters, and many do not want to di=
g trash.
For them the COIN program ought to work just fine, and if they d=
on't mind digging a little more trash to get a few more coins and rings, =
they can use Coin/Jewelry or Jewelry/Beach. I always recommend
that an XLT user make it a point to use all of the factory programs until=
they are familiar with them and feel comfortable with the little changes=
there are from program to program.
I especially suggest that the serious user, interested in some versified =
coin and relic (coin and small artifact and jewelry) hunting make good us=
e of the factory Relic Program. Many times I have encountered someone who=
has "customized" the C/J or other program and has nothing but fits with =
it.
Upon review, I note that they cranked the sensitivities (AC & PreAmp)=
to a limit and made other adjustments that will certainly hamper perform=
ance where they are.
The Relic program is sort of a default setting I sug=
gest folks go to when they seem to have a problem.
More often than not th=
ey later state that it seemed to work a bit quieter or better or even dee=
per than their own program.
I find this to be true with my programs too, =
if the site circumstances do not allow smooth operation.
SUGGESTION: If you are serious about finding coins and jewelry, start you=
r "customizing" efforts from the Relic program.
DISCLAIMER: The following programs are offered as "food for thought" and =
something to toy with.
I make no claims as to the success you will or wil=
l not have, and with this dsclaimer I ask not to be annoyed with E-mail c=
omplaints about poor performance.
If you want to shoot me a note on any p=
ositives you have, I welcome them.
I have listed a "5.3 Bushwack" program I use with the 5.3/600 coil to wor=
k in and around brush and trees and/or rubble when I search old picnic gr=
oves, woodsy trails or "blanket" sites, etc. and it allows slower motion =
with a smaller coil.
I do not search trash sites with it as it will be to=
o noisy. It is for times when I am working older-use sites that are not h=
eavily littered.
My "9.5 Open Range" program is for use with the 950 coil when I am workin=
g the wide-open spaces of some of the older park hillsides we have around=
here, where there is little trash and sometimes targets are few and far =
between, but often desirable finds. I don't use it IN ghost towns, but it=
can work well on the outskirts of towns where I am looking
for signs of any prior activity.
Again, sparse in detectable targets.
It'=
s also good for some older parks that have been thinned down and are not =
trashy.
Relic Plus is my personal "default" program.
The above two custom program=
s are designed for my type of hunting in the mineralizaton and trash leve=
ls that I frequent.
I have them set up so that IF they are stable, I can =
quickly access the Pre Amp gain and increase it a bit, or reduce it a lit=
tle if it is too noisy.
With ether the 5.3 or 9.5 program, if there is ge=
neral stabiltiy, but a few 'pops and chirps" coming through, I will first=
turn Modulation ON to see if that helps.
If so, then I search.
If Modulation ON is still noisy, and reducing the PreAmp a little doesn't=
really help much, then instead of fooling around with a "hot" program to=
try and cool it off, I simply go to my "default" program and spend more =
time hunting.
If I wanted to "fiddle" I would have taken up something oth=
er than detecting over 32 years ago.
My RELIC PLUS is simply the factory Relic Program... plus turning ON the =
following feature I happen to like..
That's Mixed Mode, Tone ID, VCO, Tra=
ck View, and Icons.
I also have adjusted the Threshold in these programs =
to be very faint, but audible, with the coil most used and with headphone=
s most used.
Just to add to your button punching, I have included a manufacture engine=
er's program, that was used last year.
I haven't plugged that one in 'cau=
se I like mine or my 'default" program or one other special application o=
ne.
