A Day To Remember
In 1977, I took part in my first deer hunt, back in Ontario, Canada. It wasn't until 1985, in a different Province, that I actually harvested my very first deer. Through work, I had met a fellow, downhill ski enthusiast. Coming from an area in Ontario with lots of ski hills, I was not impressed, when I arived in Manitoba, in 1983, and saw how flat the Prairies really were. As our friendship grew, it became known, that we both enjoyed fishing and hunting also. We came from similar family backgrounds and in no time, we became good friends and compatible hunting partners. He was already an experienced Manitoba deer hunter. I, on the other hand, had little practical experience in deer hunting but I was very knowledgeable in the behaviour of the Whitetail Deer. When I wasn't hunting, back in Ontario, I was reading just about every outdoor publication available! With my knowledge and his experience, we became an awesome team! We could read very well, off each other, in many hunting situations. I was the patient hunter, who would stay in his stand forever while he, on the other hand, enjoyed roaming around and discovering new, unseen, deer trails. With this combination, it did not take long before he flushed that first deer towards me. The huge doe was unaware that she would become this hunter's first whitetail deer harvest. She was going to make this special for me! As my friend made his way to the edge of the clearing, he was wondering why I hadn't shot yet when she first appeared on that same clearing. I was just being myself, patient! I just let her get closer to me before making that perfect fatal shot. I assume that if I hadn't seen that doe, he would have ditched me as his hunting partner! As it turned out, the "roamer" and the "sitter" made for a deadly combination on many other hunts thereafter!
