BEHIND THE CURTAIN

A. Kite (May 2003)

We all live behind curtains. I see that now. Fraser, I can actually see when the curtain is drawn. He becomes like, oblivious, super polite Mountie. Frannie comes up and starts giving him her come on, and the curtain comes down. Or somebody gets too close, gets too personal. There comes the curtain.

Frannie has her own curtain. The woman is smart and pretty, but get her around Fraser and down comes the bimbo curtain. Welsh, he looks out at the world from behind his 'I'm a crabby old fart' curtain. Huey's got his, I'm sure. Dewey if he does, it's probably an 'I'm an asshole' curtain, he can't be a jerk all the way through, can he?

I live behind one too. As I once told Fraser: Inside, I'm a poet. Outside, I'm - umph! Shake, bad guy, shake. That's me. That's what I'm about. I'm all tough on the outside, but inside - I don't let most people see inside.

I'm glad I'm the one that Fraser trusts to see inside his curtain. I'm glad he can see behind mine.
