His Place in the World

A. Kite (2000)

Detective Blair Sandburg sighed and shook his head as he entered the elevator and punched six. It didn't take a Sentinel to hear the whispered 'faggot' in his wake whenever he ventured around the headquarters building alone.

Sitting at his own desk, right beside the one he had shared with Jim, he looked around. On the sixth floor and higher, he was accepted. Below, they only saw that Ellison's faggot partner had landed on easy street.

Easy, oh yeah. They didn't count that he had gone to the same police academy they had. That he'd been beaten, shot and hurt more times in the line of duty as a civilian than ten of them. It didn't count that he'd given up everything else to be here. They only saw someone they thought had been given the breaks they hadn't received. A rookie that was already a detective.

Blair ran a hand through the short hair on his head that was just now starting to grow into halo of ringlets. He'd have to get it cut soon. He missed his long hair, missed his earrings, they didn't have a place here. A plain clothes detective he might be, but this wasn't Vice, it was Major Crimes. Brown couldn't even call him Hairboy anymore.

So far the resentment hadn't extended to Blair not getting backup when he called for it. Some day maybe the Neanderthals downstairs would come to accept the fact that a person's choice of sexual partners had no bearing on whether or not he was a good cop. Nah! Pigs would fly first.

He reached to turn on the computer monitor and open the file he had gone to fetch when his partner suddenly appeared beside him. A cup of coffee, a half of bagel spread with Philly Free and a smile that was reserved just for him.

Blair smiled back and thanked Jim. Glad to be right where he was, at his Sentinel's side. And tonight he'd be in the same spot. Sleeping beside his partner, secure of his place in the world.
