CHAPTER 12 – OPEN EYES

~ 2 DAYS LATER – 29th MAY 2001 ~

Kevin sat with weary eyes, which screamed with desperate need for sleep, alone by her bedside, praying for her to at least make some movement.  The doctors had told him, what he basically already knew, she’d slipped into a coma, though he refused to listen to their idle remarks that she may not slip out of it.

“Ser, honey, I know you can hear me, I'm here for you” he whispered clutching onto her hand

No response.

“Ser, if you can hear me, please move, please wake up, I cant be here without you anymore”

Still no response.

“Kev, we need to talk” a voice muttered from behind

“Hey Howie, what’s up?” Kevin idly replied

“It’s about the tour, they wont cancel it.  I'm sorry, I tried”

“Well I wont be joining you, my place is here”

“They were talking about legal action if you refuse to go”

Howie spoke softly and with his head buried in his chest, he hated telling Kevin all this, he also felt it wasn’t the right thing to do.

“Tell them to sue me for all I got, I don’t care”

“Kevin, please don’t talk like that, they said they could postpone it for a week”

“A week? Like I care, the women I love is lying here in a coma, and they think I’ll just up and leave her, look tell them that I don’t care what they think, I'm not going anywhere and if it means quitting the band, I’ll do that”

Howie looked at him with confusion, but looking into his eyes, he knew he was 100% serious.

Howie backed out of the room, bowing his head in silent understanding.  Kevin’s eyes swiftly drew back to Serena.

“I'm not leaving you” he whispered reassuringly

“Not ever” he quietly added, closing his eyes to lessen the pain

~ 2 DAYS LATER – 2nd June 2001 ~

Kevin sipped away eagerly at the coffee his cousin had got for him.  Brian watched intently as Kevin’s eyes flickered watching the lifeless body that lay in front of him, he hadn’t shaved it even looked as though he’d neglected to brush his hair, Brian’s heart sunk in frustration he couldn’t imagine what Kevin must have been going through, yet holding a conversation with him was a monstorous task in itself.

“Kev are you okay?”

It was a simple question, yet one that Brian was sure needed to be asked

“I'm fine, there’s no need to worry about me, worry about her” he replied nodding towards the hospital bed.

“When’s the last time you slept?”

“Sleeps not important”

“Maybe you should have a rest, we’ll stay here with her” Tamar softly said

“No, I need to be here”

“You need to sleep”

“What would you know?” Kevin shot out ferociously

He dropped his head into his hands, Brian was right, he did need to sleep, but he couldn’t and wouldn’t leave her, not again, not ever again.

A tiny cough echoed in the room.  Kevin’s eyes bolted toward Serena.  Her eyes flickered slightly, followed by another quite cough.  Kevin held tightly onto her hand, a whispered a small pray.  Her eyes flickered again, rapidly.  She jerked her eyes open, then just as quickly shut them tightly.

“Kevin” a tiny voice whimpered

“Ser, baby I'm here for you” he replied sure of the tears welling up in his eyes

Her eyes flickered again, then squinted open.  Her mouth was dry, her lips cracked, but her eyes were open.

A tear slid down Kevin’s face but he didn’t bother wiping it away.  He stroked his hand down her pale cheek.

“Can I have a drink?” she pleaded like a small child
