Chapter 13 - I Know About You

~ 3 DAYS LATER ~

Jet walked paranoid around her bedroom checking the windows, trying her hardest to not think about Ryan, he scared her and right now she was sure she could see his face, laughing at her, knowing that she was scared, scared and just waiting. The knock on her door startled her and she spun around to look at it blankly.

“Jet you in there? It’s Nick”

Jet swallowed the lump in her throat that seemed to show up all the time now, and yanked the door open.

“Hey Nick” she smiled embracing him as though she hadn’t seen him in year

“You okay?” Nick inquired as he followed her back into her room, closing the door behind him

“Yeah I'm fine, just paranoid” she smiled flopping down onto the bed

“I keep seeing him you know, I keep seeing his face staring at me, I can feel him laughing at me Nick”

“He can’t hurt you Jet, I wont let him”

Jet smiled thankfully, but when it came down to the crunch, she would never ask Nick to put his own safety in front of hers.

The ringing of the phone broke the silence as Jet leaned over to get it.

“Hello?” she whispered wearily

Silence.

“Hello?” she repeated

“It’s a world of laughter and a world of tears, it’s a world of hopes and a world of fears, there’s so much that we share that it’s time we’re aware, it’s a small world after all” the soft melody played into Jet’s ear.

She was frozen – in fear.

“Leave me alone” she screamed down the phone before slamming it down, and pushing it onto the floor.

“It was him?” Nick inquired shocked

“It was that song” Jet cried burring her head into her pillow

“What song?”

“My song, “It’s a small world after all” that was MY song Nick, I used to sing that when I was younger, Ryan used to sing it to me” she muttered

Nick looked down, worry plastered all over his face. He couldn’t understand why they would let someone like Ryan go, he couldn’t understand why they could do anything to help Jet.

He lay down next to her, his arms wrapping there way around her small frame – her back to her chest. She rolled over, curling up into his chest as he ever-so gently kissed her forehead.

~ AT THE SAME TIME ~

Ryan hung up the cell phone, he was sure the cops would tap his land line, but they were too stupid to even know he had a cell phone. He smiled to himself – he was so much smarter than them. He unlocked the toilet door. He figured there were probably some under cover’s sulking around the house, putting their nose where it wasn’t wanted, but again he was too smart for them. He slipped the phone and the small tape recorder into his cargo pants pocket and slinked out of the toilet, after flushing it.

He, deep down somewhere, still cared about his daughter, that was after all his flesh and blood, the boy was nothing to worry about, Devin and him never really got on, anyway Ryan was so sure Devin would turn out like him, which in Ryan’s eyes would probably be punishment enough. But the girl, she abandoned her own roots, actually she’d done worse, she’d put him in the hell hole, she’d sent him to jail, that was her fault, and for that one traitorous act she would pay. He was sure of it.

He already had an old mate looking at her, watching her every move, he needed to know his routine, she he could slide into her life, without her even knowing – until he was 100 percent ready. Things would get a bit difficult he assumed with lover boy always with her, so far he’d been there almost every night, he’d come around 6, leave around midnight, one time he didn’t leave at all. Gus, the guy Ryan had hired to watch her, had said that they would usually go to her room, talk for a while, the blinds would go down, and then, as Gus said “You don’t have to be a bloody genius to figure out the rest of it”. Over the last 2 days Ryan had, as best he could done research on the Boy, he’d found himself in public libraries, occasionally with a “tail” sometimes without, Gus also was on the case finding out what he could. The kid was relatively famous, knowing by most younger girls, been in a “boy band” and all, he lived with his parents, 1 brother and 3 sisters. He was in a band with three other guys, 3 who shared an apartment in Orlando, the other also living with his parents around the same area – Alexander James McLean, 19, Brian Thomas Littrell, 21, Howard Dwaine Dorough, 23, Kevin Scott Richardson, 24. The kids life was there, lay out in front of Ryan in a simple manila folder.

He wasn’t sure how to work his way around the boy, he couldn’t hit him directly – too dangerous, he’d have to scare him off, and he had an idea.

Ryan sulked back into the bathroom and turned the shower on. The sound of the pelting water filled the room. He plopped down onto the floor against the wall in the far corner and began to dial.

“Yes?” a male voice replied calmly

“Gus?” Ryan questioned

“Who wants to know?”

“It’s Ryan”

“What can I do for you?”

“I need a tail on the boy, I wanna scare him off”

“Do what we planned?”

“Yeah”

“When”

“Tonight, tomorrow, as soon as”

“As good as done mate”

“Knew I could count on you”

“A bit of actions good for the old bones”

“Where are you?”

“Outside the girls house”

“And?”

“And the lights still on”

“Is the boy in there?”

“Yeah, be there for a while probably he usually is”

“What does she look like?”

“Dark hair, kinda short, skinny, she’s quite pretty”

Like her mother.

“Better go, the watches will be getting anxious to see me”

~ 1 HOUR LATER ~

“You should probably be going huh?” Jet muttered her eyes sore from tears

“I don’t have to” Nick responded, refusing to let go of Jet’s trembling body

“But you should, I don’t want to screw things up with you and your parents”

“It doesn’t matter baby, I'm not going to leave you here”

“I'm okay, really I am, you go”

“Sure?”

“Yeah, I’ll be fine”

“Okay well ring if you need me”

Jet walked Nick down to the front door and held it open to him.

“Thank you Nick, for been here and for caring”

“I'm only ever a phone call away alright?”

Jet nodded slowly as she embraced Nick tightly and kissed his lips gently.

~ 10 MINUTES LATER ~

Nick looked into his rearview mirror for what seemed the hundredth time, the care about 10-15 meters behind him had been there since he left Jet’s house. Maybe he was just been paranoid. He turned into his driveway, and stopped – the car slowed down, but passed him, and carried on down the road.

“You’re paranoid Nick” he chastised as he opened the gate with the control and drove it, closing it behind him.

~ THE NEXT DAY ~

It was barely even morning when the sound of Nick’s phone ringing echoed through his spacious room. He groaned as he reached over blindly to pick it up.

“Hello?” he muttered down the phone

“Nickolas?” a male voice, clearly disguised said calmly

“Who’s this?”

“You tell me?”

“Screw you” Nick huffed slamming the phone back down

He rolled back over, just to hear the phone ring again.

“What?” he spat down the receiver

“Didn’t your mother teach you manners boy?”

“Look I don’t know who you are and if you think you’re funny –“

“Stay away from her boy”

“Who the fuck is this?”

“STAY AWAY FROM HER CARTER, I know who you are, I know your family, tell your sister Angel that was a good soccer game she played yesterday, I know your friends, so don’t fuck with me. Stay away from jet”

The phone clicked dead, leaving Nick holding the receiver.
