Chapter 4 - Sooner Or Later They Find Out

"Look Devin, I am so not in the mood"

“Well you better get in the mood. What if he got arrested huh? Is that what you want Jet? Is it? Why do you have to just go out and” Devin stopped mid sentence

“Well finish what you were saying Devin, you meant to say why do you have go out and be like a cheep whore, isn’t that right? Fuck you Devin, why don’t you just say it, go on, you think I'm a slut, a whore, a bitch, whatever word you want to use, but hell that’s what you think I am, and you know what? I don’t care, maybe that is me, but it’s my life and I’ll screw it up anyway I want to”

“Jet that is not what I meant”

“Yeah sure okay, whatever”

She turned around and began to stomp off.

“Don’t you even care about Nick?”

“Why should I? He wont be back, they never are” she remarked walking into her room, slamming the door behind her.

She dropped down onto her cane chair in the corner of her room, and clutched her raggedly old teddy as hard as she could as the tears ran free from her eyes.

~ AN HOUR LATER ~

Dear Diary

I wish I could erase the past. Start over, change who I am, wipe the slate clean. Why is it that we are always judged by what we DID, never by what we’re doing, and most of the time, the harshest judger is the closest to us – ourselves. We refuse to see what’s right before us, hoping if we don’t notice the problem will simply go away.

Jet nibbled away at the pen she held tightly in her hands, searching her soul for the words she longed to scribble across the paper. She sighed loudly, it was useless.

The tap on her window alerted her to someone else’s presence. She looked up to see Nick peering into the window.

“What do you want?” she questioned opening the wooden framed window

He pushed his head up, his lips pounding onto hers. As quickly as they had come, they broke away allowing a smile to come to a front.

“Hey there” he muttered

“Nick what are you doing at my window?” she questioned laughing a little

“Your bothers friend scares me” he shrugged

“Sorry I missed you this morning, I didn’t want to go without saying goodbye, but you looked so peaceful” he remarked his blue eyes shining with intensity

“You wanna go do something?” she inquired a plan formulating in her head

He nodded quickly.

“Out of the way” she announced flipping one leg out the window.

She jumped out of the window, and smiled up at Nick.

“Let’s get some ice cream” she pleaded like a small child

“That sounds good” he winked following her as she ran across the bright green lawn.

~ 30 MINUTES LATER ~

“I gotta go to the little girls room, I’ll be right back” Jet announced standing up

She placed her wallet on the table and headed off in the direction of the toilets.

Nick studied the object on the table. He suddenly had an urge to look in it. He looked around like a naughty child then reached across and took it into his warm clutches. The Velcro made a crackling noise as he slowly opened it. Change rattled in the first pocket as it opened fully.

He looked at the photo of Jet along with some people he’d never met before placed under the clear plastic. He filed through her cards, nothing major, a bank card, video card, a student ID for the Florida State Correspondence School.

“She’s still doing school” he muttered to himself.

He studied the card closely, it was much like the one he once had, when he was on the road a lot and did most of his tuition by correspondence, and later on with a tutor.

He laughed a little at the face she was pulling in the photo, then his eye was drawn down to the number underneath.

“2nd February 1984”

It didn’t take him long to do the math, if that was her birthday, she was only 16.

“What are you doing?” Jet inquired standing beside the table

“I – Uh” Nick stuttered dropping what he had in his hands

“You shouldn’t be nosey” she remarked filing the card back into it’s place

“How come it says your birthday is in 1984?”

A lump bombarded Jet’s throat, he knew – now what was she going to say? She was speechless.

“So you are only 16? I cant believe you would lie to me”

“I cant believe you went through me wallet”

“Don’t put all this onto me”

“Don’t worry I wont”

She snatched up her wallet and marched out of the small ice cream parlor.

“What is your problem?” Nick blurted out running to catch her

“Take your pick Carter I'm fucking fill of problems, look I'm sorry I lied to you, but in all honesty after last night I didn’t ever expect to see you again”

Nick stopped dead in his tracks.

“What does that mean?”

“It means, you don’t have to be here Nick, you don’t have to feel sorry for me. You got what you want you didn’t need to come back, they never do”

She looked down at the ground and continued on her original path – home.
