Chapter 7 - Letting Go

“You got that petrified look on your face again, don’t worry Nick I’d expect you to say no” Jet sighed carrying on down the path

“What is that meant to mean?” Nick questioned following her

“It means, you’re the type of person that would rather everything just stayed the same, you stay put, running isn’t your idea of living” Jet said shrugging her shoulders as she sat down

“How do you know?” He pouted

“I just do” Jet smiled patting the ground

Nick sat down next to her.

“But that’s why I'm here with you, I like that about you” she whispered dropping her head onto his shoulder

“I like everything about you” he quietly said his hand rubbing against the side of her thin body

~ LATER THAT NIGHT ~

“Nickolas, where have you been?” His mother inquired as he walked in the door

Her face was red, perhaps with anger, perhaps with the heat.

“Out” Nick shrugged making his way up the stairs

“Nickolas, there’s something I think we need to talk about” she said sternly

He spun around and looked at her idly.

“What?” he sighed annoyingly

“This girl, on MTV who is she?”

‘Great’ Nick mumbled to himself, she’d seen that.

“Her names Jet” he replied simply

“And?”

“And what?”

“And are you dating?”

“Yeah, so?”

“Nickolas there is no need to be so coy about this, I'm just trying to look after your interests”

“Well thanks, but if you’re going to give me a big lecture about how money and fame changes the way people think and act, spare it, I don’t need it, okay”

“I thought you would have learned from the other girls”

“Jet’s nothing like them”

“How do you know?”

“Because I just do”

“How old is she Nick?” his father questioned walking around the corner.

“What are you both ganging up on me now?” Nick muttered “She’s 16” he added

“Have you –“ his mother began, worry starting to show on her face

“Oh as if that’s any of your business” Nick huffed

“Nickolas Gene Carter, don’t you get it? If you and her have been intimate, that counts as statutory rape, then how would that look? Cant you see she’s probably only in it for the money, fame, stature and once she’s used you to her hearts content she will sell her story to all the blood thirsty tabloids who will just eat this one up”

“You don’t know her!” Nick announced loudly “Don’t you dare say anything like that about her, you’ve never even met her”

“She probably knows I can see right through her game”

“No, she knows that you’re a cynical bitch!” Nick yelled

He stormed up the stairs and slammed his bedroom door leaving both of his parents shocked.

Nick picked up his cell phone and dialed Jet’s number, angry tears were spewing from his eyes.

“Hello?” Jet answered

“I need to see you” Nick sighed quietly

“Nick, are you okay?”

“I just need to see you, I’ll pick you up in 10 minutes” he sniffed

“I’ll wait outside” she whispered before he hung up the phone

He gathered together some of his clothes, and accessories into a small bag just as there was a knock on his door.

“Nickolas?” His mother said quietly through the door.

“Go away” Nick huffed, locking the door

“Nick please we just want to talk to you” Bob sighed

“I'm done talking, we both made our points clear”

Nick opened the window, bag in hand and climbed out onto the 1st story roof. He chucked down his bag first.

“Nickolas open this door” Jane pleaded tugging on the handle

Nick took another look into his room, as he backed down the trellis along the side of the house. He ran across to his car, after picking up his bag, got in and drove away.

“Is that his car?” Bob questioned hearing the engine roar

Jane looked at her husband then darted downstairs, just to see Nick disappearing down the road.

~ 10 MINUTES LATER ~

Jet stood shaking in the dark night. Her eyes were drawn to the bright lights of a car coming towards her. It pulled along the footpath and stopped. She opened the door and hopped in.

“Wow, you only just dropped me off like half an hour ago” she smiled “Aren’t I lucky”

“Where do you want to go, I’ll drive you anywhere, Georgia, Texas, you name it we’ll go, I have enough money in the bank, and we’ll never look back, he’ll we’ll even go to the airport and fly out of here” he announced solemnly

“What?” Jet questioned as Nick pulled onto the Freeway

“I want to run with you” He sniffed

Jet could tell his eyes were red and sad.

“You wanna tell me why?”

“They don’t know you, but they still think they can tell me what you’re like” he sighed

“Who? You’re parents?”

He nodded slowly and turned his attention to her.

“That’s why you wanna run?”

“I want to be with you”

“Nick pull off at the next off-ramp”

The car pulled off the Freeway and down a road, Nick veered right down another darkened road, which seemed to be deserted.

Jet’s hand ran gently down the side of Nick’s face, her thumb wiping away a stray tear.

“Nick I want to be with you to, but not like this. It seems to me that your parents have always been there for you, they’ve always stuck up for you, wanted what was best, that’s not something to run away from, that’s something to cherish” she said quietly

“But you wanted to run”

Jet bowed her head – perhaps it was time to tell him everything about her.

“I want to run TO what you have, not from it. When I was growing up the only father I knew was a drunk who when he wasn’t picking on me and Devin, was throwing my mother around the room. The only life I knew was one filled with sleepless nights just waiting for dad to come home, and all heel break loose, and when he wasn’t slapping us around, the house we lived in was been raided by the police, or people I didn’t even know in our living room, getting drunk. I would lie in my bed just waiting for one of them to venture upstairs to my room, I would hide in under my bed, in the closet, anywhere, or I’d run into Devin’s room, where he’d tell me that one day we’d get away from this. He was right, but not the way we wanted to be. Dad got real drunk one night, he was like this monster, I was cowering in the corner of the lounge when he without a second thought plummeted a knife into my mothers chest, because she wouldn’t give him the money he wanted, it was for the rent she kept yelling, but he just stabbed her, took the money then left. I don’t know why he left me there, perhaps he was too drunk to notice I was there. Devin came home to find the ambulance and police surrounding our house. My father went to jail for that, but he’ll be able to leave one day. We took what little money we had and the life insurance mom had, and moved here. Devin was awarded full custody of me, and so the story begins. But you see Nick I would die to have two parents that cared about me, It’s my dream to be able to sleep at night without one eye open, whether or not you see it you’re parents love you, and I would give anything to be a part of that”

Jet leaned in and hugged Nick, her own tears going through his shirt.

“Are you saying I should go back? I wont let them keep us apart”

“This isn’t the way to show them how we feel”

“Then what is?”

“They may not like me now, but that’s because they don’t know me. People judge other people because they’re scared, and they’re scared of loosing you, they probably think I'm a mean wolf just waiting to carry their son away. Trust me on this one, we’ll show them” she smiled

“Where did you learn to be so right?” he smiled starting the engine

She took his hand away from the key, and turned the car off.

“Let’s just stay here for a while” she whispered kissing his neck

Her lips worked their way up to his, devouring his skin with love. His slid his hands across her body, the very feel of her stirring his body members.

“Do you want to?” he suggested nodding towards the backseat

Jet climbed over to the backseat tugging Nick along behind her. She felt his hands roaming her body, as she touched his. Their lips met in unrestrained passion, gliding across each other in an amorous rhythm. He pulled her top up over her head, his lips never relenting form the kiss for a moment, her hands fumbled with his shirt but soon enough she’d removed it from his body. He lay her down onto the soft leather of the back seat, a slight chill went careering up her spine, but the touch of his lips on her bare skin, soon warmed her.

Infatuation entwined the two as their bodies came as if one. She felt him inside her, surging, begging for release. Her hands groped at his back as he pushed himself deeper. She arched her back, encasing him. The air around them became hot and heavy as they melded together in crazed passion.

Lips met with skin, as they continued exploring each other without restraint. Exhausted and smiling, they parted, though still in each other’s arms. He kissed her forehead gently, his warm breathe pushing hard against her.

“I wont let anything keep us apart” he whispered into her air, and for once in her life she believe somebody, whole heartedly she believe his words.

~ AN HOUR LATER ~

Nick pulled into his driveway, still unsure if he wanted to be there.

“It’s for the best” Jet smiled touching his hand softly.

They both got out of the car and walked hand in hand to the front door. The door was yanked open as Jane’s worried face starred back at them. First to Nick, then to Jet.

“Where have you been? God Nick I was worried sick about you” she sighed as she gestured him to come in.

Nick looked his mother squarely in the eyes.

“This is Jet, the girl I love, and if you cant accept that tell me now, because she means everything to me, and if you cant cope with that, then it’s best I leave” he said strongly

Jane’s eyes focused on Jet, who was smiling nervously. Nicks hand was clutching to hers tightly reaffirming what he’d just said.

“Why don’t you both come in?” Jane suggested

Nick looked across to Jet who nodded.

Bob soon met them in the lounge as the four sat down on opposing sides.

“Nickolas you shouldn’t have run off like that” Jane remarked her eyes darting back and forth between Jet and Nick

“Well I needed to” he replied simply “Look Mom, and Dad, I'm sorry for any worry I caused you but I needed to be with Jet, I love her, why is that so hard for you to see?”

“You’re two young to know what love is”

“How can you say that? You don’t know me, you only think you do”

“Nick, please think about this, I'm sure she’s a lovely girl, but for two people so young to say they’re in love, it’s just not true”

“She has a name! At least give her the respect of talking to her”

“Nick please” Jet pleaded touching his arm “Mr. And Mrs. Carter, I think I know what you’re thinking right now, that either I'm only in it for the money, or the fame, or just for the sheer experience of it all, but I can assure you’re wrong, none of that matters to me, and it never will”

Jane sneered at Jet, as though laughing at what she’d said.

“I cant ask you to believe me, but I can at least ask you to reserve your judgment on me, till you know me”

“I'm sorry you were pulled into this Jet, but you see I’ve seen girls like you before, they are a dime a dozen”

“Stop right there mother, don’t you dare say it” Nick announced bounding to his feet

“Don’t raise your voice at me Nick”

“But it’s okay for you to blatantly harass Jet, when she is trying to get along with you?”

“No Nick, that’s what you don’t see, she’s trying to manipulate you, that’s why you ran off tonight”

“No mother, Jet is the reason why I'm back here, otherwise I would have just kept on driving”

“Please don’t fight on account of me. Mrs. Carter it’s obvious that you like things direct and straight to the point, so here it is, you don’t know me from a bar of soap, you’ve never met me before but you think you can easily judge me based on what other people have done, I respect the fact you’re trying to take care of you’re son, trying to protect him, but cant you see all you doing is creating a rift between the two of you. I bet you’re thinking that if I wasn’t in the picture then everything would be perfect, till when? Till he meets someone else? Till his head gets so screwed over with ideas he doesn’t even know what the world is? Don’t you see, I'm not the problem here, I'm just showing it for what it is, your lack of wanting to let go. You have to see that Nick is going to grow up, whether you like it or not, he’s going to make mistakes, but that’s how we learn. I care for Nick deeply, and perhaps you’re right, maybe we don’t know what love is, but how do we know unless we try to find it, like you did, you found your husband, you confessed your love for him, let us find ours. I'm not in this for whatever materialistic reasons you think I am, I'm in it for love. You don’t have to like me, but at least reserve judgment, for Nick’s sake”

Silence hung in the air, she’d obviously hit a spot.

“If you cant accept us mom, tell me now and we’ll make it simple, we’ll leave”

“I do everything to try and make you happy Nick, if this makes you happy, then okay” Jane sighed

For once she saw her son, growing up before her very eyes, she’d always sheltered him, she’d taught him, and now she had to let him go it alone.
