Chapter Fourteen: Unconditional

“You should go home, get some sleep” Kevin urged as Brian watched a nurse hovering around Piper
“No, I'm fine, I'm going to stay here” Brian replied, running a hand through his shaggy hair
Kevin frowned, but knew there was nothing more he could say. He sighed quietly and sat down on the chair next to Brian.

“Their asking why your in here, we cant ignore it for much longer” he spoke gently, he knew the last thing Brian cared about was publicity or the media, but he had to get it out in the open.
“Let them think and write whatever they want, that’s not my concern” Brian replied, still watching the nurse who was now checking the machines
“I understand that Brian, but-“
“Please, not now” Brian interrupted, holding his hands in a pleading manner
“Alright” Kevin nodded, “we’ll keep a lid on it as best we can” he sighed, wondering what wonderful stories the media would come up with, perhaps they would say Brian himself was suffering from and eating disorder, Kevin thought the way he looked now would give enough evidence.

Despite the rules on relatives only staying over, the hospital in this case made an allowance with Brian, they offered him a bed down the hall, but he flatly refused, he would sleep, if he so desired, in the uncomfortable chair if it meant he could be near her. He wouldn’t leave, he wouldn’t walk away like he’d believed he’d done with Hannah.

Leah had come again, placing a flower arrangement on the windowsill, but ignoring Brian completely. She was planning to stay the night in a nearby hotel then decide what to do tomorrow. Robert, Brian assumed, had gone home as he wasn’t anywhere around.

Brian stood now in front of the outside window, his eyes bouncing from light to light in the city that stretched out in front of him. He turned briefly, looking at the still motionless figure.
“Piper, I'm so sorry, I made a mistake, Hannah never blamed you, that’s why she chose you” he sighed, walking over the bed.
He took Piper’s still hand into his and kissed it gently.
“Hannah thought she saw everything in you, she thought you were perfect, when she realized that you weren’t” he paused, a tear slipping down his face “she knew that you needed help. You see, Hannah realized something before she died, she realized that what you see in the mirror, isn’t what’s always there, it’s the same with people. What we see, what we choose to believe isn’t always reality, Hannah understood, and now I do” he paused, sniffing back the flood of tears
“I understand that your scared, I know that your hurting and I know that” a deep breath “I love you”

He kissed her hand again, soft tears blessing her skin at the same time. He breathed in deeply and walked back to his chair. Picking up a piece of paper and a pen he began to write.

It was 7am when Brian awoke to the sound of nurses in the room. They smiled gently at him and assured him nothing was wrong, just routine. Piper was still comatose, and was not expected to wake up anytime soon, though one older nurse assured him with a story of another women, that we can never predict when the will wake.

He quietly wondered to himself how many more days would there be like this.

(3 Week’s Later)

Leah had gone home, instructing Brian to let her know is anything in Piper’s condition changed, Brian wondered if she’d already given up. The press was all over the story, and as Kevin predicted most people thought it was Brian with the eating disorder, the few pictures they somehow scored of him down in the hospital café seemed to ‘back’ this story up. Brian seemed, however, not to care at all, his mind was solely on Piper, and the notebook he carried around.

Brian out-rightly refused to do any public appearances or news briefs, stating quite strongly it was not there business and he would not, under any circumstances put Piper’s privacy on the line without her even knowing. Brian wasn’t naïve, he knew what they would do, romanticize the relationship, get in touch with old friends, who quite frankly had no right even thinking about been a friend to Piper, they would dig up photos, perhaps even records of her stay at the clinic, there was no way Brian would let that happen, he would protect her even if it meant destroying himself.

Brian sat down on the familiar chair this time not alone. A guitar sat on his lap. He needed no words, no script, for he’d spent the last three weeks memorizing the words to the song meant for no one but Piper. The song he would sing now.

“Piper” he paused searching for the words, he shook his head, he could come up with nothing prophetic to say so he would simply say the truth “this song I give to you, as I give myself”
He strummed the cords quietly, orientating himself with the instrument. He drew a breath, closed his eyes and began to sing

I know it seems like night is closing in
And you're all alone
But I promise you that I'll be here
And you'll have a home
Your soul is weak
Your heart is dying
But I will never leave you
Alone and crying

Baby, its okay to cry sometimes
And it's okay to feel this pain
Just know that I will always be here
That's my unconditional love
I will hold you
Deep into the night
Take my hand
We'll make things right
I promise from heaven above
This is my unconditional love

Do you feel lost sometimes?
Like there's nowhere to go
Is darkness caving in on you
Burring you deep below
You try to live
The way they taught you to
But it's slowly killing you
From skin, to bones, to you

Baby, its okay to cry sometimes
And it's okay to feel this pain
Just know that I will always be here
That's my unconditional love
I will hold you
Deep into the night
Take my hand
We'll make things right
I promise from heaven above
This is my unconditional love

On your knees
Trying to live
On your knees
Love to give
On your knees
Falling to cry
On your knees
Bleeding to die

Baby, its okay to cry sometimes
And it's okay to feel this pain
Just know that I will always be here
That's my unconditional love
I will hold you
Deep into the night
Take my hand
We'll make things right
I promise from heaven above
This is my unconditional love

On my knees for you
A promise I give you too
I promise from heaven above
My unconditional love
