Chapter Nine: Memories

Abby starred out into the darkness, she couldn’t sleep, she rarely could.  Her mind had been played with so many times before she wondered if she would ever be normal.  A friend told her that it was over and soon she would be normal, she would become Abigail Reid, normal 21 year old, without the voices in her head and without the curdling smell that sometimes filled her noise.  She hated her mind, sometimes she wished she could throw it away.  She wondered why she wasn’t strong enough to take it, the others had, they had been able to cope, they had been able to sleep – but not Abby.  He said it was because her mind was too weak, a friend told her it was simply because she was too young.  She didn’t know who to believe anymore, she wasn’t sure even if she believed herself.

She shook a little, cupping her knees up to her chest.

“Try and be strong Abigail, I know you can be”

“No, I don’t want to be strong”

“You must, I need to know, what happened”

“I cant, I cant do it”

“Abby, you trust me don’t you?”

“Yes, but the voices, they wont go away, they wont leave, you’ll make it worse”

“For a time.  But I swear on my grave I’ll help you”

“You cant, you cant give me a new brain”

“I can rid you of memories, but first I need to know some things”

“Please no”

“Please Abby, I need your help”

“Please Abby I need your help” Abby whispered to herself as she rocked back in forth

She rammed her hands onto her head and swung it back.  Why would the visions not leave her?

“Their still here, in my head”

“I know Abby I'm sorry, I'm trying, I'm not as good”

“Get them out, you promised”

“I'm trying, I promise you”

Abby cried to herself as more memories flooded into her head, which she squished between her hands, maybe hoping to squeeze them out.

“Have you been a bad girl Abby”

“No, no please leave me alone”

“What did you do Abby?”

“Nothing”

“What did you do Abby?”

“Nothing”

“I can read your mind, do you want me to do that?”

“No, please, I didn’t do anything”

“I don’t believe you”

“I didn’t”

“It’s your fault you know”

“No, no its not”

“Yes it is Abigail, you made the mistake”

“No, Jessica did”

“No, you did.  You weren’t strong enough”

“Let me go”

“I will haunt your mind all yours days Abby”

She screamed again, tears rapidly streaming down her face.  The voice was right, her mind was haunted. Haunted by visions and memories that wouldn’t leave her.  she struggled to remember something, anything that would help her.  her mind flashed to a young girl, smiling brightly as she swung on a swing hung on a large oak tree.

“Higher” she laughed playfully

A voice laughed behind her and two hands came down lightly against her back, pushing her higher as she’d requested.

It was blurry but she could see people everywhere, laughing and playing.  Smiles were everywhere and voices were all around, but the young eyes concentrated on nothing but the sky above her, dreaming to touch it one day.

“I want to touch it one day, the sky, do you think I will?” she questioned, the smile on her face making it obvious she’d lost her front baby tooth

“You will Abby”

“You promise”

“One day Abby I promise to let you touch the sky”

Another flash, skipped her forward in time, the laughing and the smiles had gone, there was nothing left.  People were packing up and leaving, everyone was sad, people were crying.  She didn’t understand, she ran away into the trees hiding in the bushes.

“Abby, it’s time to go”

“No, Papa, I don’t want to go”

“Abby you need to come with me”

She cried a little but followed.  In front of her stood two others, holding bags.  There was a man there, a tall man in a black suit.  He took one of the others, she didn’t cry or object, but she was scared.  Abby called out, then called to the man.  She called to everyone, but no one listened to her.

Another flash,

A tent, a large tent with a roof that looked as though it reached all the way to heaven.  It was dark and cold, no light, no people.  She was sitting on a chair, her little hands hugging her little body.  Someone entered, smiling.  Why? Why were they smiling, Abby wasn’t happy.

“Abby, look at me” a voice commanded with a booming deepness

Abby looked up, her tiny eyes squinting.

“You need to be strong Abby, can you do that?”

She nodded.

“Are you a strong little girl?”

She nodded again.

“Look at me Abby”

She looked up.

“Be strong, I trust you”

She nodded slowly.

“Relax Abby, you’ve seen this done before, I need you to relax”

She nodded.

“Okay, lets begin”

Abby dropped her head onto her knees, all she ever wanted was for the memories to go away.
