Chapter 14: Deceived

December 10th- 6:00pm

Faith yawned slightly as she gently urged the baby to feed. She was tired and sore but at the time incredibly happy and overcome with joy.

Thomas was premature, but feeding well and all things account for was a healthy baby, a miracle of God right there laying in her hands.

“Mrs. Litrell?” Jenny, the head nurse smiled as she walked in the room
Faith looked up, managing a smile.
“We need to take Thomas to be weighed when you’re ready”
Thomas gurgled softly as he played with Faith’s finger.
“He’s just finished a feed, so I suppose you could do it now” Faith remarked softly
“He’ll be gone for 10 minutes at the most”

The Officer at the door looked in the room.
“Everything alright?” he questioned
Faith looked up, she’d forgotten he’d been posted there.
“Yes thank you. Thomas just needs to be weighed”
Jenny slowly took Thomas from Faith’s hands.
“Promise we’ll be back real soon” Jenny smiled
“Need me to go?” the Officer, who Faith had neglected to remember the name of, inquired
“Uh, I’m not sure” Faith responded, she trusted Jenny, Jenny had been there when she’d gone into labor, she’d held her hand when Brian couldn’t. Not to mention she was shorter then Catherine and he doubted Catherine could ever make herself and an African-American with a half Jamaican accent - she was not Catherine in disguise.
“Better come just to be safe” Jenny offered, she looked down to Faith and smiled, “Make you a little less tense? But I promise I wont let my eyes off him” she winked and Faith suddenly felt at ease, and rested her head on the pillow.

She watched the three leave and her eyes suddenly felt heavy. A few minutes after they’d left she realized there must have been more than 1 officer at the door as another appeared in the doorway.

“You’re partner went with Jenny to weigh Thomas” she smiled
“I’m sorry?” the Officer responded, almost perplexed
“The other Officer, if you were looking for him”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, he went with her about 7 minutes ago”
The Officer stepped back and muttered something into the hand-held radio.

“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing man, just stay where you are”
“What’s going on”
“Ma’am, I never had a partner, it was just me, I got called to a suspicious character hanging around about 7 minutes ago”
“Oh my God” Faith panted her heart stopping with a realization the Officer had obviously also come to.

She tried to stand, her feet touching the cold floor, yet she couldn’t find her feet. She fell to the floor as everything from that moment on lurched into slow motion mode. Nurses ran into the room as a least a dozen Police ran though the hall.

Minutes passed into an hour - Thomas was gone.

Two Detectives sat with Faith along with a nurse who tried to calm Faith’s shaking body.

“Do you remember anything in particular about the Officer”
“No, I don’t know. He was young, tall” she wracked her brain to think of anything that stood out to her, “there was nothing else, I don’t know. Have you called Brian yet?”
“We’re sending some officers over there now”
“I don’t understand, he was Catherine, she cant hide herself that well” Faith cried
“We’re looking into every aspect, perhaps she ad help”
Faith shock her head. “No, Catherine always worked alone”
“You know a lot about her?”
“When your face to face with a person, you become soul to soul. I know how she thinks, because I learnt to think like her, so yes, I know a lot about her”
“Where would she go?”
Faith closed her eyes.
The Oak leaves, the matchbox cars, the position of Carla’s body, the letter - none of it was Catherine, Catherine had used scriptures to point to her thoughts. She had tormented and then shown herself, nothing left made any sense to Faith. Except if -.
“Oh my God, I know” she whispered
“What?”

“Sir,” two officers rushed in the room, but stopped when they saw Faith.
“What is it?” the Detective questioned
The Officer bent down and whispered something into his ear. His face gave it away.
“Where’s Brian?” Faith screamed, reading his face like a book.

Brian’s eyes slowly opened. His head throbbed and he soon realized his hands and feet were bound. He looked around for any indication as to where he was, but none came. The windows were boarded up, there was no sound and the interior merely told him it was an old cabin that hadn’t been lived in for a long time. His nose caught a stench that launched through his body. His head turned to the far side of the room where the head of what looked like a deer lay covered in a mess of flies and maggots.

He lurched his head back feeling the vile move into his throat. But he was gagged, meaning if he vomited he would surely choke on it. He forced it back down and tried to think of something other than the rotting head in the corner of the room.

************************************

They had found Jenny with a single bullet wound to the temple - the 3rd eye as it were in the Buddhist Culture - she was then dumped into the laundry shoot and found her way to a bed of white sheets.

The Officer was nowhere to be seen, allowing the assumption he was not who he appeared to be.

They had not been able to locate Brian in the house or on the grounds. They did however located a single splatter of blood, identified as blunt force trauma to the head. He had not dropped to the floor as there was no other signs of blood. There was no sign of struggle at the house, meaning one of two things 1) he knew the attacker, or 2)he was caught from behind. There was no sign of forced entry which went to corroborating the first.

The whole team working on this case knew one thing however, they’d misjudged the psychopath they were dealing with - and they had assumed the wrong target.
