Chapter Six – Trust Me, Trust Me Not
Faith walked back into the dining room, where Catherine was waiting patiently.
“You’re fiancé is leaving?” she inquired sideward
“He’s got a few errands to run, that sort of thing, we don’t really need him do we?” Faith responded as she walked over to the breakfast bar
“No, no, I'm sure we can handle this ourselves” Catherine smiled, tapping her nails against the glass table.
“Cup of coffee or something?” Faith inquired switching on the jug
“Coffee, 2 sugars” Catherine responded, with a thankful gaze.
“Do you mind if I use your bathroom?” she inquired standing up
“No, that’s fine, straight up the stairs, take the right side then your first door on the left” Faith replied placing two mugs on the counter as Catherine excused herself
She wandered up the stairs and instructed, and veered right as the stairwell split into two. From the top of the stairs she looked around, making sure Faith wasn’t watching her. She slid along the wall of the second story opening every door she came too. The 3rd one on the left seemed to be it – the master bedroom. She smiled crookedly to herself as she walked in.
The room was soft half white color, in the center stood a huge wrought iron bed, with a wooden frame and iron decorations between the pillars. To each side of the bed were aged wooden bedside tables, with 3 draws each, and a lamp on top. Both sides had photos placed carefully on them in shining silver frames.
Catherine strolled uninhibitedly around the room, tracing her fingers across the matching aged wood dressers. The room was covered in photos, ones of Faith and Brian, ones of Marty, ones of locations, people and places Catherine wasn’t familiar with, the walls themselves were fairly plain decorated in only the occasional painting. She walked slowly around the room, as if familiarizing herself with it.
The room had 2 balconies coming off it, one to the side of the house, and one to the left. The one to the side was shut off with 2 large French doors, with large blue curtains to either side, which swept the floor with ease. To one side was a small love seat, that had a small collection of stuffed animals, some holding hearts, some letters, others just sitting there in fluffy silence. To the other side of the doors stood a tall bookcase, with a small stereo and TV set up on it, in the perfect location to watch from the bed, Catherine suspected. She looked out the French doors, the balcony was nothing spectacular, just a small, simple balcony. One not used very often, Catherine concluded.
She took in the room piece by piece, area by area, jotting down notes in her head. The second balcony was at the back of the house, and had the same matching doors, but this balcony was bigger and obviously used more often. It was home to two large lounger chairs, each with a table to the side of them, and it looked out into the expanse of the backyard, and the pool directly below.
Time was moving on, she had to make her decision. Where was the best place? She quickly circled the room one more time, and stopped to the side of the bed. She assumed it was Brian’s side, the left side of the bed, as he had a photo of Marty and Faith on the table. She ran her fingers across the deep blue patterned duvet, imagining to herself how it would feel wrapped around her own, naked body. She leant down and pushed her nose into the pillow, inhaling the scent imbedded in it. Catherine knelt down, running her fingers underneath the frame of the bed.
“As good a place as any” she smiled removing one of the bugs from her bag. She placed it quickly and easily under the framework of the bed, and stood back up.
As she looked up, she saw him standing there, looking at her, his heckles high up, his mouth growling wonderingly. Marty barked loudly, sending his thunderous bark echoing through the house.
“Stupid dog” Catherine growled as she ran to the door
He barked louder, desperate for his master to hear him. He was blocking the door, so with one knock Catherine smacked him with her bag, and scooted past him. He was knocked back only a little, and barked even loud and harder as Catherine disappeared into the bathroom, closing the door quietly behind her.
“Marty!” Faith called from the bottom of the stairs
He stood poised in front of the bathroom door, barking exhaustingly.
“Hey, here boy, heal” Faith announced as she wandered up the stairs.
She heard the toilet flush, and a few seconds later, the bathroom door open. Marty growled louder, he was on the edge of pouncing at the stranger.
“Marty, back up, now” Faith announced harshly. This time, he healed, and stood behind Faith.
“I'm sorry about that, Marty has a problem with strangers” she smiled as Catherine emerged fully from the bathroom.
“No problem” Catherine shrugged
He’s expendable she laughed to herself as she followed Faith back down the stairs
They strolled back into the kitchen, Marty still growling annoyingly at Catherine.
“Marty, stop it” Faith announced, pulling on his collar
Catherine starred down at him, an evil glare in her eyes.
“I'm so sorry about this” Faith half smiled as she dragged Marty outside the French doors to the porch and practically threw him outside.
“He’s not usually like this” she added handing Catherine the coffee she’d made earlier
“It’s no problem” Catherine shrugged “Where did you get him?” she inquired starring at the dog that paced around the porch in frustration
“Brian bought him for me actually, a few weeks after we met. I saw him on our first date in the window of a pet store, a few weeks later he turned up on my doorstep” Faith smiled remembering how it was pouring with rain, and there on her doorstep sat a half drenched puppy, and an even more drenched Brian.
“Sounds sweet” Catherine mumbled coldly
“Marty to us, I suppose represents when we knew it was forever” Faith gushed “he’s like the glue between us, a symbol I suppose” she added with a slight chuckle
“How adorable” Catherine grinned “Should we get down to business?”
~ LATER THAT NIGHT ~
“So you really like her?” Brian questioned as he pulled the tank top he was wearing, up and over his head
“I do, she’s nice. And you wouldn’t believe how much help she was in one day” Faith smiled as she tucked her legs up under the blanket “We got a new reception place, we’re going to have a look at it tomorrow” she added, placing the book she was skimming over on the bedside table
“And you trust her?” Brain questioned as he walked over to the bed, clothed in just a pair of smiley face boxers
Faith nodded slowly, looking up at Brian who slipped into the bed beside her.
“Alright then. But if anything happens, and something seems weird, I want you to tell me okay?” Brian smiled as he laid his head on the pillow
“Uhuh” Faith grinned as she flicked off the light beside her
