Prisoners may be exiled from Ambon
AMBON, Maluku: Prisoners jailed for supporting the separatist South Maluku
Republic are likely to be exiled to Java.
Ambon penitentiary warden Fernando Koer said they are drawing up a plan to send
defendants found guilty of repeat offenses to Nusakambangan prison.
He said the plan has been discussed with Maluku Governor Karel Albert Ralahalu.
He said the plan would make prisoners think twice about committing the same
offense after being released from jail.
"Several people involved in the controversial cakalele dance incident were once jailed
here, including Simon Saija, who is on the police wanted list," Fernando said, referring
to the recent flag-waving incident in front of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
He said the plan was also necessary as Ambon penitentiary did not meet general
security standards.
"Under the law, a prison should have two fences or walls, while Ambon penitentiary
only has one, and it is only about four meters high.
"This situation could encourage prisoners to escape," he said. -- JP
