Alien
"Alien" is the first movie of one of the most popular sagas in science fiction history, and introduces Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, the iron-willed woman destined to battle the galaxy’s ultimate creature. The terror begins when the crew of the spaceship Nostromo investigates a transmission from a desolate planet and makes a horrifying discovery, a life form that breeds within a human host. Now the crew must fight not only for its own survival, but for the survival of all mankind.

The Film
In it's day, I would've considered this a masterpiece. Such a scare (for the time), it jsut wasn't done that way, and pushed the boundaries of acceptablity. The chest-bursting scene for one just wasn't usually seen in film of that era, and ended up being groundbreaking. Nowadays, however, this doesn't do so much, for me at least. It's main disadvantage is that it's so old, and hasn't dated well at all. Another drawback is towards the end: the flashing lights make is difficult to see what's going on, and takes away from the tone. Otherwise, suspenseful and generally entertaining.

Aliens
This time it's war.
The only survivor of the Nostromo's deadly encounter with the alien, Ripley's escape pod floats in space for 57 years. After being rescued, Ripley is stunned when her story is met with disbelief. Then all communication is lost with the colonists who've settled on the alien planet. When the Comapny asks Ripley to accompany a tam of high-tech colonial Marines back to LV-426, she refuses. But she ultimately realises that the only way to banish her fear is to confront it head on. Sigourney Weaver reprised her role as Ellen Ripley for one of the most comelling and critically acclaimed sequels of all time.

The Film
Although Aliens isn't much newer than Alien, it certainly looks that way. Cameron has a way with advancing cinema, which he did even more impressively in Terminator 2: Judgement Day. But for Aliens, two years after his biggest franchise opener (The Terminator), the freshness is evident, and appears much more modern. This is its main advantage over Alien. It's also more of an action film, rather than horror, which also adds to the energetic tone. Overall, a much better effort than the original.

Alien3
The bitch is back.
The third chapter of the most terrifying saga in science fiction history.
Lt. Ripely (Sigourney Weaver) is the lone survivor when her crippled spaceship crash lands on Fiorina 161, a bleak wasteland inhabited by former inmates of the planet's maximum security prison. Ripley's fears that an Alien was aboard er craft are confirmed when the mutilated bodies of ex-cons begin to mount.
Without weapons or modern technology of any time, Ripley must lead the men into battle against the terrifying creature. And soon she discovers a horrifying fact about her link with the Alien, a realisation that may compel Ripley to try destroying not only the horrific creature, but herself as well.

The Film
Very underrated in my opinion, although David Fincher apparently hates it. I'm a big fan of his, so maybe this is why I don't dislike this one. If you thought the tone was dark for its predecessors, this one appears so much darker, with an ending that may leave you surprised. The end (I'm going to spoil it so don't read on) is probably one of the first of the 90's that shocked, and particularly with the killing off of the main character. At the time, this surely meant the end for one of the most successful franchises, and this was perhaps the biggest disappointment: if you didn't like the film, there wasn't much hope of there being any improvement in a sequel.

Alien Resurrection
Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) died fighting the perfect predator. Two hundred years and eight horrific experiments later, she’s back. A group of scientists have cloned her, along with the alien queen inside her, hoping to breed the ultimate weapon. But the resurrected Ripley is full of surprises for her “creators”, as are the aliens. And soon, a lot more than “all hell” breaks loose! To combat the creatures, Ripley must team up with a band of smugglers, including a mechanic named Call (Winona Ryder), who holds more than a few surprises of her own.

The Film
At times, this just seems like violence for violence's sake. So much gore and killing, the likes of which hadn't really been seen in the three other films. The way of bringing Ripley back was unusual, but very unconvincing, even for the genre. It's not a bad film, but could've been done so much better, and everyone had high hopes, and can't help but felt let down from this.
