This site provides a striking and, perhaps, depressing, contrast to The Chestnuts. Now nothing more than a jumble of granite lumps spread across fields on both sides of Park Road, this once significant site (The wedge-shaped mound, 15 metres wide at the eastern end and tapering to about 10 metres at its western end, is nearly 75 metres long, and once had up to 50 stones forming a peristalith!) is testament to the attempts of successive societies to reduce or eradicate so-called "pagan" sites. The stones have been broken, cast aside, stolen, its riches plundered. Finally, a road was driven through it.. This is a superb example of the intolerance which has characterised the power of societies across the ages.

Please note that, whilst the remains of The Long Barrow can be seen from the road, the road itself is very narrow, and is not a safe place to park, or even to walk, particularly during darker periods - please do see it as part of the main tour.
