Salzburg, Austria

For more than a half century, the Salzburger
Adventsingen has delighted tens of thousands who
attend the annual concert in Salzburg's Great Festival
Hall. Inspired by their success, a group of talented
musicians developed a similar Advent program in Volusia County, Florida.

For six years, Our Lady of Lourdes Church hosted the annual Adventsingen concert in Daytona Beach and eight years ago the program moved to Grace Lutheran Church (above) in Ormond Beach. The program is patterned after the Salzburg program
and it retains the warm and simple folkstyle of that region. Everything from Alpenhorns to the churchbells of Salzburg can be heard in the background. Pastor Virginia Barnes blesses the Crismon trees and the audience hears the real story of "Silent Night" instead of the fairytale that so many heard in their youth.

The pageantry includes the meetings with Innkeepers, who turn Josef and Maria away with word that there is no room at the Inn. The program ends with the audience joining the chorus in singing Austria's famed "Christmas Andachtsjodler."
