Birds and Wildlife (Kathmandu/Koshi Tappu/Chitwan/Bardia/Kathmandu - 16 Days Package Program)
From:
A&R#1:
Day 1: Arriving in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel (5*). Days 2-4 Nepal's capital lies in a broad basin surrounded by a ring of mountains. A guided visit to the forests of Phulchowki, the highest peak on the rim, will introduce you to the delights of some of Nepal's 840 bird species. You will encounter new species from familiar families such as woodpeckers, flycatchers and warblers, but also come across new and colourful Asian specialities including various minivets, babblers, bulbuls, laughingthrushes, minlas, yuhinas and sunbirds. You will also visit some of Kathmandu's remarkable cultural attractions - the Durbar Square, a remarkable mélange of palace buildings, courtyards and temples; the Swayambhunath temple with its bands of mischievous Rhesus Macaques; or Pashupatinath, one of the holiest of Hindu temples. Nights at the Hotel Shangri-La/Hotel Raddison or similar. Day 5-7 You fly southeast to Biratnagar and transfer to Koshi Tappu for an exploration of Nepal's finest wetlands. The construction of a giant dam on the Koshi River has produced a complex of open water, marshes, small pools, lagoons, mud flats and farmland which are ideal habitat for both resident and wintering duck, geese, storks, ibises, herons, egrets, waders and seabirds, which in turn attract good numbers of raptors. Drier areas are inhabited by a variety of land birds. Among the more sought after specialities are Swamp Francolin, Red-necked Falcon and Hodgson's Bushchat. Koshi provides the last Nepalese refuge for Wild Water Buffalo, distinctly more impressive than their domestic cousins, while Leopard, Fishing Cat, Golden Jackal and the highly endangered Gangetic Dolphin number among the other mammalian residents. Nights at Koshi Tappu Tented Camp. Days 8-10 After breakfast set off on the drive west to the Royal Chitwan, Nepal's most famous Park. Here you will be escorted by some of the country's most experienced naturalist-guides in a series of walks, elephant rides, jeep and canoe trips through jungles with a spectacular wealth of wildlife and birds. Top on the agenda is an encounter with the endangered Indian Rhino, but in the process you will see animals such as Wild Boar, Sambar, Spotted Deer, Hog Deer, Grey Langur, mongooses, civets, fruit bats and possibly even a Tiger, Leopard or Sloth Bear. Along the river look out for two kinds of crocodile – the broad-snouted Mugger and the slim-nosed Gharial. Avians are everywhere and the keen birder is likely to end up with an extremely long list of prinias and bee-eaters, hornbills and pigeons, owls and trogons, mynas and eagles, drongos and parakeets to mention but a few. Nights at Tiger Tops Tented Camp, Chitwan. Days 11-13 Reluctantly, you leave Chitwan for the long drive to the Royal Bardia National Park but the rewards in Nepal's remote mid-west make the effort worthwhile. Your base on a superb riverside site is the only resort within the Park boundaries, and run by the professional Tiger Tops team. Many visitors praise the wildlife watching as being even better than at Chitwan. Bardia is the only place in Nepal where Blackbuck are found, while Swamp Deer and Nilgai are also specialities not encountered at previous Parks. A wonderful array of birds and other mammals guarantees an enjoyable stay. Nights at Karnali Tented Camp, Bardia. Days 14-15 A 2½-hour drive takes you to Nepalgunj airport for the flight to Kathmandu and a final day at leisure. You may prefer to return to the forests of Phulchowki for further birdwatching, visit the botanical garden at Godaveri, or simply wander round the streets of the city soaking up the atmosphere. Nights at Hotel Shangri-La or similar. Day 16 Departure from Kathmandu to your country.
