Prologue

“Summer’s almost over.”

“Yea…”

She looked up, into his gorgeous green eyes, “We’re leaving the day after tomorrow.”

He gasped, “I thought you had two more weeks.”

“We were going to stay longer, but my dad’s law firm called him back. A really important case came up.”

“Lana…”

She looked up at him, grinning falsely, “We’ll write each other…we can keep in touch…”

“Yea…”

“Yulanilana (You lawny lawn a)! We’re leaving to go out to dinner!” her mom called from the front of their rented house.

“Coming!” she called back.

“So,” she turned to him, “I’ll see you tomorrow, right?”

“Wild horses couldn’t keep me away.”

She smiled, then walked away, leaving him sitting on her back porch, thinking about nothing but her.

“Lani! Are you all packed sweety?” her dad called up the stairs.

“Yea.” She called down half-heartedly. She didn’t want to leave. She loved it here. She loved the endless fields, the horses. She loved him. Of course, she hadn’t told him that. Her parents told her that she was too young to know what real love was, but she knew they were wrong.

She grabbed her bags and carried them down the stairs, to find him waiting for her.

“Can we go for a walk?” he asked, before she could say anything. She simply nodded, too upset for words.

They headed towards the woods in back of her house. They both knew exactly where they were going. It was where they had first said hello, and it would be where they would say good-bye.

When they reached their spot, she sat down on a rock, and he found another straight across form her.

“I can’t believe how fast the summer went.” He started.

She looked at him, grinning, “No summer has gone faster than this one…”

They sat in silence. It wasn’t uncomfortable, just silence. In that silence, though, they both heard so much.

“Can I tell you something?” he turned, looking her straight in the eye.

She nodded, unable to speak because of the intensity in his gaze.

“Lana, I love you…more than I have ever loved anyone in my life…I will always love you. I know you’re leaving today, and that I picked the worst day to tell you this…this will only make your leaving harder, but I had to tell you.”

Tears filled her eyes as she replied, “How can I leave you? I love you so much Vin…” She threw her arms around his neck, and as he held her close, she cried the few tears she had left.
