No
horses required. The participants must pick themselves a partner. Each pair is
given a feed sack. Each person must put a leg in the sack. Everyone lines up at
a starting line. When the judge tells them to go, they must race to the finish
line, keeping their legs in the sack. The first person to cross the finish line
with their legs still in the sack wins.
This
is a timed event. A balloon is placed on an upturned five gallon bucket at the
end of the area. The participant must go down to the bucket, get off the horse,
blow the balloon up, sit on it until it pops, get back
on the horse, then return back to the finish line. The rider must go around the
bucket. Certain modifications can be made for different age groups and certain
age groups may have assistance.
This
is a timed event. The rider must pick up a softball off of a barrel at the far
end of the arena & then drop it in a bucket near the finish line, then
cross the finish line. The rider must go around the barrel with the soft ball
and the softball must stay in the bucket. If the softball is dropped anywhere
other than in the bucket the rider is disqualified.
This is a timed event. The rider must go down & pick up an aluminum can off of a barrel and come back to the finish line without dropping the can. The rider must go around the barrel and must stay on the horse. If the can falls to the ground before the rider crosses the finish line, he/she will be disqualified.
This
is a timed event. Hotdogs are hung between 2 poles at the far end of the arena.
The rider must go get a bite of hotdog without using the hands & come back
across the finish line without eating it. The rider must show the arena
director the piece of hotdog at the gate.
Each
participant is given a clear plastic cup filled with water. Then the riders are
asked to go along the fence through three gaits, walk, trot and lope, in each
direction, similar to Western Pleasure. Speed and leads or
not that important. The trick is not to spill the water. The rider with
the most water left in their cup wins. The water must remain in the cup. You
cannot hold it in your mouth or spit in the cup while the class is going on.
Riders may be asked to perform a certain gait with no stirrups. Exceptions may
be made for certain age groups.
This
is a timed team event. One person is waiting at the other end of the arena on a
barrel. The other person must ride the horse down and “pickup” their teammate
and come back across the finish line. The horse must go around the barrel and
both riders must be on the horse when they cross the finish line (Meaning no
part of either rider can be touching the ground). Assistance and exceptions may
be made for certain age groups.
A
pair of overly large “bloomers” (boxer shorts) is placed on a barrel at the far
end of the arena. The rider must go down to the barrel, get off the horse and
put the “bloomers” on, then get back on the horse.
Then return back to the finish line. The rider must go around the barrel and
the “bloomers” must be on the rider and the rider on the horse when he/she
crosses the finish line. Certain age groups may have assistance.
This
is a time team event, one person on the horse and one person on the “cowhide”.
The person on the horse must pull the “cowhide” (basically whatever you can
find to drag safely behind a horse) complete with its rider around an obstacle
at the end of the arena. The rider must be holding on to the “cowhide” when
they cross the finish line
This
is a time team event. Basically you swap riders on the horse. One person is
standing at the other end of the arena behind a barrel or a cone. The first
rider goes to the other end of the arena where their partner is waiting, gets
off the horse. The other rider mounts (preferably one of the pony express
vaults, but not necessary) and comes back to the finish line. The horse must go
around the barrel or cone with a rider on it and the second rider must be on
the horse when they cross the finish line.
The beanbag race is a timed event. 4 hoola hoops are placed in the arena along the fences. The rider is given 4 beanbags at the gate. The rider must attempt to drop the one beanbag within each hoola hoop while traveling on horseback. If the beanbag lands on the hoola hoop it counts as being in. The rider is allowed to miss up to 3 hoola hoops and still have their time count. For each missed hoola hoop a 5 second penalty will be added to the time. If the rider misses all 4, he/she will go down with a no time.
