Ascension Equestrian, Inc. is a piece of Ascension
Parish history. It was organized in 1968 under the name “East Ascension Rider’s
Club” by a group of people who wanted to promote the recreational use of horses
and has evolved into a significant contributing factor to our community.
A.E.I. is one the few recreational organizations in
the community that stresses total family involvement. We try to provide
activities for all age groups, from as young as toddlers who are led on horseback,
to as old as senior citizens who would rather have someone lead them on
horseback.
The club strives to uphold the same ideas and values
that the original board members based the organization on. Those original board
memebers were Julius Dubois - President, Cleveland Melancon - Vice President, Stanley Dixon - Secretary, Fred
Tucker - Treasurer, Herman Guedry, George Furlow, Gayle Braud, Lionel (Bully) Mayers & Amos Nickens. The club activities are geared to stress the
importance of responsibility, the thrill of good old fashion competition, good
sportsmanship and education. We help teach and coach the members who are
learning and encourage those who are constantly progressing.
The club tries to cover a broad spectrum of interest
from rodeo to the backyard horseman and holds different types of activities
through the year ranging from rodeos to horse related seminars and benefits to
just plain fun days. The normal club season is from April to August. Points are
kept throughout the season with an awards banquet held at the end of the
season.
A.E.I. has been a stepping stone for some of the
outstanding citizens in our community. Many have used the knowledge and
experience gained to become successful in their endeavors. Other members have
gone on to compete and do well in national organizations such as 4-H, AQHA,
National High School Rodeo Association, Collegiate Rodeo, Professional Rodeo
Cowboy Association, Professional Bull Riders and Women’s Professional Rodeo
Association, not to mention all the small associations in the gulf south
region.
The main focus of A.E.I. is the family. We try to
supply an environment where parents and children can come and have a good time.
A place where parents don’t have to worry about where their
children are hanging out and with whom. This involves a joint effort of
the whole membership, both young and old that is the only thing that makes it
possible. If you are interested in joining our club please ask one of the
members and they will be happy assist you.
The members of A.E.I., both young and old, would like
to extend a warm welcome to you and hope you come out and join the fun.
Thank you,
Ascension Equestrian, Inc.
