PINE RIDGE OCCUPATION CONTINUES
By Steven Barrett

* Spokesmen say they'll stay until
tribal treasurer is officially removed.

PINE RIDGE-- The 5-week -old occupation of Oglala Sioux tribal
headquarters continued Wednesday, a day after some Sisseton-Wahpeton
Sioux took control of the tribal council building in the opposite
corner of the state.
A spokesman for the Oglala Sioux protesters at Pine Ridge said
there likely will to be a quick end to the occupation on the
southwestern South Dakota reservation.
They will stay until suspended tribal Treasurer Wesley " Chuck"
Jacobs is officially removed from office and steps are taken to
return the reservation to a more traditional Lakota form of
government, said Floyd Hand.
" We are going to be here until he's totally removed and we
formulate our constitutuion for a better government," Hand said by
telephone from the Red Cloud Building.
The have been in contact with tribes across the nation since
their protest began, he added, and the actions of the
Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux came as no surprise.
" We already knew these were coming," Hand said.
The protesters at Agency Village have alleged corruption on the
part of tribal leaders. That stalemate ended peacefully Wednesday
afternoon.
At Pine Ridge, protesters say tribal funds have been mismanaged.
They have persuaded the tribal council to suspend the treasurer and
order an audit of tribal financial records from the past five years.
Council members, who have been barred from entering the
headquarters since the occupation began, say the protesters are upset
over belt-tightening measures taken by the council.
Calls to council members were not immediately returned Wednesday.
