Elves are one of the most common races of Melmoth. Slender, with pointed ears and a delicate beauty, true elves can live for many thousands of years. They make excellent mages and thieves, with their ability to move silently, and warriors/thieves automatically receive sneak. All elves can see in the dark with infravision. Golden, silver, or black hair, along with blue eyes, are the most common among true elves. Iron burns their skin, but they also resist charm spells very effectively.
Humans are the typical adventurers and the most common race. Though short-lived, humans are known for vitality and drive that leaves them aching to put an indelible mark on the world around them. They come in all shapes, colorations and sizes, having more variety within than most any other race; decent at all classes. Unlike the elves, who were created as a 'good race' and mostly tend towards that, humans also come in all different alignments- a force for chaos on the lands.
Giants are clumsy yet strong behemoths, 9-12 feet in height and the tallest of the mortal races. (Obviously, dragons are excluded.) Their intelligence is rather limited, but their strength and durability is exceptional. Fast healing is given free to all giants, and giant warriors automatically receive bash. No other race can compare to them for excellence in warfare, but they seem utterly inept at anything but. Generally, they don't care much for personal hygiene, and would far rather pound you into the ground than discuss philosophy.
Dwarfs, one would think, should be the opposite of giants, and yet the two races have much in common. They share high strength and constitution, as well as a lack in dexterity, and make excellent fighters. However, dwarfs are known for their piety, and many find themselves called to be clerics- and good ones, at that. Like the elves, they receive infravision, and have stores of wisdom that come from their long lives. Dwarven warriors seem to prefer axes, and are often extremely proud of their thick, bushy beards- insult one and you may feel the foul temper that comes from their natural berseker rage. (On a side note, it is said only other dwarves can tell the difference between a male and a female. Who knows?)
Shyfts are small, delicate fairy-like creatures. Their small size gives them both benefits and curses; always affected by haste, but they take double the damage. Their agility is amazing, especially with their skill 'blink' that allows them to instantly teleport out of danger from anywhere, and lends them towards thievery as a suited career.
