Model Flying Machines

1908 W H Martin's Flying Machine

Here are a few images of the Martin Flying Machine: the top three photos come from a family-run website entitled The William H Martin 1886 Monoplane. (If you have difficulty accessing the site, then the material can also be found within this Word document.)

Though the family's website dates the craft to 1886, it doesn't say why this is so. In the absence of further information, I've decided to use the date of 1908, as this was when the patent was first applied for, though obviously the model would have been made before then.

There are no building plans for the model, however the patent drawings are very clear, and could be used in the absence of plans. The exact size of the model is uncertain, but one of the photos, showing the model being held in a hand, would indicate a wingspan of 6 to 8 inches.
