FEBRUARY 2003

Date:

The meeting of the PSA was called to order at 8:40 a.m. by HS Chair, Junko Ogawa. Minutes from the last meeting were approved, subject to the final revisions.

Newsletters:
  • Discussion revolved around how parents can best be kept informed, i.e. hard copy delivered through child and/or electronically, as well as how accuracy can be maintained. A consensus was reached: the PSA will propose that an attached monthly calendar be included in a combined newsletter edited by the Director’s secretary and delivered by the last school day of each month. The PSA Chairs would be required to submit their contributions on behalf of the PSA to that editor, and the PSA would no longer need its own newsletter editor.

Events:
  • Sunita Kunzru reported on behalf of Mrs. Sen that the International Food Fair was a success. It should be made clear that the IFF is not a PSA event and does not dictate what group is the beneficiary of funds raised.

  • The Flea Market is March 1 and volunteers are needed to help with security and entrance collection. It was suggested that the husbands of those participating be asked to help.

  • Teacher Appreciation Lunch is scheduled for April 21 and the PSA will be soliciting for participation next month.

Parents Coffees and Parent/Teacher Conferences:
  • The Change from Nov to Oct for both MS/HS P/T conferences and the change from March to Feb held for HS P/T conferences was received very positively and will most likely be permanently rescheduled accordingly. The Middle School is having their conferences as per original schedule March 28th.

Mike Foxall hosted a ES Parent Coffee on January 30, attended by 35 parents where assessment and In-Service days were discussed. Parents have been surveyed about their interest level in the extension of the length of the day as well as the new report card format. Only 20% responded; results will be shared in the next newsletter.

Board Report:
  • Renu Dhawan reported that the last Board meeting had been held January 23; there would be two meetings in March since there was no meeting in February. The Strategic Planning Committee has proposed new language for the school’s mission statement that will be voted on by the Board. New security measures include surveillance cameras and electronic gates, some of which have already been implemented.

It was reiterated that parents should keep the School Directory confidential and that they should turn in or destroy the previous year’s directory.

Treasurer’s Report:
  • Lorraine Moos presented the Treasurer's Report. There was lengthy discussion about how PSA-raised funds are spent, either directly by the PSA or by the school principals. The Treasurer and the PSA Chairs will hold a special Executive Committee meeting on March 10 in the PSA Lounge at 2:00 p.m. to set guidelines.

Curriculum Council:
  • Malika Pillai advised that the Vertical Review Committee is on trace and will have the first draft of the Foreign Language Curriculum available in March.

Other Business:
  • Chris Files offered to organize a PSA-sponsored cultural event in the coming weeks and suggested Sharon Lowen. As some parents might not know how accomplished a talent Sharon is, publicity will be important to ensure a good turnout.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 a.m.

Substitute Secretary, Janet Golden
