-
Treasurer’s report: Rajni reported that the expected closing balance for this year is Rs173,673. This includes the deduction of Rs. 10,000 for HS, but the remaining balance of Rs10,000 and the Rs20,000 for MS and ES remain in the account. Next year’s committee will have to decide if they want to donate to their schools and for what or if they want to put towards overall school project like parent seating/ swim pool area refurb. etc,.
- ES reported that an interesting discussion had been held with Brenda Conlan, consultant on drugs and alcohol about how to talk to young children about such matters and the importance of modeling responsible behaviour.
- MS announced that there will be a Talent and Farewell show on 19th May at 2.10pm.
There is also a MS party at ACSA on 22nd May. Parents should have received letters about this. Parents are needed to act as chaperones. Please ring Gail Walker (tel: 9810979824) to volunteer.
- HS- Rs5000 requested to spend on ‘after exam’ snacks. Request accepted.
Gail explained that there is a parent driven scheme in the US to create a ‘Community of concern’ around alcohol and drug use prevention. The scheme revolves around a booklet that can be adopted and adapted by individual schools along with a parent pledge. Gail has put the idea of this to Kathy Bader who in turn is going to discuss it with the school team to see if it is something that AES wants to adopt. Gail requested that the new PSA committee also consider their position on this and give some thought to forming a sub-committee on the issue.
A further discussion ensued concerning the importance of parents talking to each other, being aware of what the issues facing their children are and acting in accord with each other regarding setting limits and norms of acceptable behaviour. HS parents’ nights have been very successful in this respect. MS expressed an interest in holding similar nights next year and also in carrying out a survey to find out what the ‘norms’ amongst parents are in terms of everyday issues such as bedtimes, pocket money, what freedoms children are allowed etc, by grade.
- Beka announced that there will be a welcome coffee on the first day back at school next year and then a further coffee for latecomers on 18th August. All parents welcome to come along to help greet our new friends.
