PSA MONTHLY MEETING
October, 2002

Date:
October 17, 2002

The meeting of the PSA was called to order at 8:40 a.m. by HS Chair Sunita Kunzru. Minutes from the last meeting were approved.

School Reports
  • Middle School
    • Middle school reported on a successful coffee evening. Next one to be held Nov.19 am.
    • An e-mail has been sent regarding the math curriculum. Parents’ input needed, so please respond.

  • High School
    • High School had a good Parent/Teacher Conference on Oct. 11. Next one scheduled for February.
    • A coffee evening was also held re: guidance for Mini-courses. Next coffee evening on Nov. 12.
Events
  • Tickets are now on sale for an ‘Indian Night under Stars’. This is a fun evening for parents and staff with good food, entertainment and dancing on 26th Oct. from 7.30pm until late. This event has proved to be very popular in the past- so please buy your tickets soon!

  • As a note for next year, this event should be planned not to coincide with the return of mini-courses (and exhausted staff) or with office Diwali events. A later date in November was suggested for 2003.

  • Events for children as well as parents are planned for later this year with the High school Fall Fiesta and the International Food Fair.

  • Laurie Parker has agreed to co-ordinate Halloween Trick or Treating again. Please contact her if you are able to act as your neighbourhood co-ordinator or if you want to have your house as a stop-off or just donate candy.

Web-Site
  • Parents are encouraged to contact the PSA with any comments/ suggestions or queries at PSA@aes.com. So far there has been very little activity. It was suggested that a short newsletter be circulated outlining events/ issues and where to find out more on the website, to encourage people to start referencing the site.

Curriculum
  • Jan Patten, the curriculum co-ordinator, said she welcomed the two-way communication she was getting from parents via the PSA. She emphasized that the first point of contact if you have an issue or concern is your child’s teacher and/ or Principal.

The issue raised at the last meeting about teaching Hindi as a foreign language will be considered as part of the 1st study year of the curriculum review. Math was again raised as an area for concern in the later years of Elementary/ early years of Middle.

Jan again advised initially speaking to the teachers directly about your child and the particular concern. It was suggested that this could be a good topic for discussion at the next coffee meetings, with the relevant teachers’ present.

Charter
  • Some revisions have been made to the original PSA Charter. These will be posted on the web-site. If you have any queries, please contact Janet Golden. A meeting will then be arranged to vote the changed in.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 9.30am.

Caroline Mackay, Secretary
