PSA GENERAL MEETING
October 14, 2004
- Dr. Hetzel talked about the AIDS Awareness Night. A film about AIDS called "A Closer Walk" will be shown on October 28th at 7:00 p.m. Middle School and High School students and parents are encouraged to attend. The film is narrated by actors Glenn Close and Will Smith.
- Tickets for Night Under the Stars are for sale at a price of R1,100 each.
- Volunteers are needed to help with the forensics tournament (October 4-6).
- The Fall Fiesta will be on November 6th. This event is organized by students.
- There will be an accreditation team at AES from November 8-10.
- The next PSA meeting will be November 18th.
- The guest speaker at the meeting was Dr. Dekleva, Regional Psychiatrist of the U.S. Embassy. He spoke about "Culture Shock." Dr. Dekleva gave a very interesting talk highlighting the factors causing culture shock. These include: terrorism, frequent moves, changing school, lack of spousal employment, loss of control, the fishbowl phenomenon, work stress, poor support system, family issues, crime, racism and issues for third culture kids. He mentioned two useful web sites for expatriates seeking helpful information:

- The minutes from the previous meeting were read by Helen Brudvig and passed.
- High School reported that they had hosted several coffees. The next evening would be on October 27th. The Assistant Dean of William and Mary will be the guest speaker.
- Middle School reported that the 8th grade coffee had about 30 parents. The next coffee will be hosted on November 2nd in the HOP. The theme will be all about "What is happening to my teenager?"
- Newsletter: Emma Simmons needs timely inputs on events and coffees.
- Pat read a note from the Curriculum Council meeting which focused on special needs children. Anyone with input on this should contact Sandhya Kodanghudi.
- There was discussion on the need for a community calendar of events.
- The meeting ended at 10:45 a.m.
