HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
May 2007

Dear Parents,

In order to help strengthen the highest level of Personal Integrity within our school, we are organizing a Student/Faculty Honor Council for next school year.

Two of the Core Values within our School Mission state that:

(1) Trust and Respect are essential in relationships and
(2) Life is more meaningful when lived with integrity and passion.

A Student/Faculty Honor Council would provide leadership within our school community to help ensure that the highest levels of honesty and personal integrity are maintained. The Honor Council would consist of 5 students and 2 faculty members. The Council would organize its own agendas and meeting times. Decisions would be made by consensus. The school administration would provide logistical and financial support for the independent operation of the Council.

Examples of the kinds of activities the Council could decide to address include:

1. Create or rewrite a school-wide Honor Code.

2. Review current policies on Cheating, Plagiarism and Academic Integrity and forward recommendations for change to the school administration and faculty and when appropriate to the School Director and the Board.

3. Hear student appeals regarding violations of existing policies on Cheating, Plagiarism, or Academic Integrity.

4. Consider ways to raise the public consciousness of Personal Integrity within the school community.

The challenge of strengthening Personal Integrity within the school has been discussed through a number of forums during the past year. By actively engaging student representatives in partnership with faculty members will I'm confident have important, beneficial results for our school community. Students will hear and understand the perspectives of teachers and vice versa. The resulting synergy could well produce insights that could go far to improve policies and practice within the school and raise the standard of Personal Integrity within the student body to new heights.

Students have been invited to nominate themselves or others with this coming Friday being the deadline. Our student government, ASC, is developing criteria for selection of the 5 students. A number of faculty members have expressed interest to participate. I will be keeping you abreast of the progress we make in the forthcoming school year.

Sincerely,
