Soon a master mage named Justarian became acquainted with Khelin. He saw his ability and talents for the Art. Justarian took him as apprentice and taught him the basics of magic. . Years later Khelin fell in love with Kalicia, an apprentice of Justarian. Both spent much time together. He was happy. When the time for Kalicia came to take her Test of High Sorcery he accompanied her. He intended to join the Red Robes, but Khelin was not ready for his test. His travels distracted him sometimes from the dusty books. . Kalicia failed the test and was killed. Blinded by grief Khelin immediately demanded to take the test, too. He knew that he was not ready. Instead he wanted to follow his love, for he gave himself the blame for her failure. Khelin succeeded in surviving the test, severely wounded. And he was allowed to join the White Order of Magic.
