Ghazni is four hours south of Kabul on a dusty road. It has a number of historical sights and is a good place to break up the journey between Kabul and Kandahar. Famed for its two giant minarets, the town also has a beautiful Old City section and some famous tombs of muslim holymen. It's not a very attractive place with the main road through town filled with oil barrels but definitely worth seeing. The town is a lot more spread out than it seems with many attractions near the old Islamic Museum in a section that could qualify as a separate town. The Minarets These two amazing structures are some of Afghanistan's great archaeological treasures. Unfortunately, there's a small military post right next to the minarets, making this a very sensitive area. Tapa Sardar On a hill near the highway you'll see where the ruins of Tapa Sardar are located. Transportation To Kandahar: Share Taxi 300k Hiace 250k Bus (24 hours?) 170k (rate at 35,000 = one dollar) It's a long journey to Kandahar and you should definitely invest use a shared taxi. Or better yet, get a flight from Kabul if they're running. Accomodation Accomodation can be hard to find but locals who speak English will point you in the right direction. Pantomimes might be necessary. Home |
