Heroes And Angels Part 2 |
Walking into the SIU that afternoon was a bit difficult for Harvey. He felt bad about how he had just walked out on Cassidy that morning, but he also wasn't sure what he was going to say to her yet. To add to that, he was still holding on to Mac's angel, and it was burning a whole of guilt into his pocket, and into his heart. He greeted a few people as he made his way to his desk, and sighed thankfully when he did not see Cassidy at her desk yet. "Well, hopefully that gives me a few more minutes." He muttered to himself. No sooner had he uttered the words than he saw her coming towards her desk. Before he could get up to talk to her, Joe grabbed him and pulled him in the other direction. "Where the heck are you taking me Joe?" "We need you to fix the wiring in the surveillance van." "What did you do to it this time?" "I swear it wasn't me. I was nowhere near it, but some of the cams aren't working." "Great. Just what I wanted to do right now." "I sense the sarcasm in that statement. It is not appreciated." "Whatever Joseph. Just lead me to the van." About two hours later, he returned to find Cassidy sitting quietly at her desk finishing some paperwork. He sat down and tried to do some work of his own, but he couldn't stop staring at her and wondering what he should say. Finally he got up and walked over to her. "Hey Cass...Can we talk?" "Are you talking to me? I thought you didn't have anything to say?" "I get that you are upset-" "Upset!!! I am more than upset." "Maybe we could talk about this somewhere a bit more private." "Why the hell would we need to do that? Everyone in the SIU already knows you screwed me!!!" Everyone turned to watch the commotion. Harvey grabbed her by the arm and pulled her away to a quieter spot. "What the heck are you talking about?" "Really, than how is it that they all know we slept together?!" she pointed around the room. "I don't...I am gonna kill him!" "What are you talking about now?" "I happened to mention it to Joe this afternoon in the van. He swore he wouldn't say anything." "And you believed him for what reason?" "Cause I am a colossal idiot...Cass I am really sorry." "Sorry isn't going to fix this." Harvey saw Joe walking in the distance. "No, but this is damn well going to make me feel better." He began to walk towards Joe. He came up behind him and tapped him on the shoulder. As Joe turned around he was met with a stiff right hook from Harvey. Immediately Antwon and Nash came in to pull Harvey away. "What the Hell is going on Harv?!" Antwon shouted "I can't believe you told. You swore you wouldn't." "It slipped man, I am sorry." "It slipped!!!" Harvey tried to lunge at Joe, but was restrained by Antwon. "Enough!!!" Yelled Nash Antwon led Harvey off to cool down, and Joe went to get some ice for his face. Nash and Cassidy went to his office to talk, while the rest of the SIU went back to work. Nash sat and listened to Cassidy as she went on about the night before. Quietly he pondered whether or not he should kill Harvey now or give him a chance to explain why he took advantage of his only daughter. "Daddy, I know we shouldn't have. It just happened." "I know sweetie." He hugged her as she cried into his shoulder. Then he looked up to see Harvey standing at the door. With a nod he allowed him to enter. Quietly he came in and shut to door behind him. Cassidy turned in time to see the door click shut. "Cass...Nash..." "I think I'll leave you two alone." Nash quickly made an exit. "...um, I should really apologize-" "It wasn't entirely your fault." Cassidy responded "If I hadn't talked to Joe, none of this would have happened." "maybe, but it doesn't change what happened between us." "I know that, but-" "No buts, it happened. I don't regret it. I think it is a little strange now, but I don't regret it at all. We needed each other last night. I just don't want things to be weird between us now." "ok, I can deal with that." She gave him a half smile. "What?" "I just can't believe I actually slept with you." "Well, geez thanks a lot." "I didn't mean it like that. It is just that, I have known you since I was a little girl. If someone had told me back then that I would be standing here right now, I would have laughed right in their face." They both began to laugh. "I can't argue with that...so is Nash planning my demise as we speak?" "Don't worry I can handle him. I have been doing it all my life." They smiled and hugged one another. Then Harvey got a horrible look on his face. "What is it?" "You think I should apologize to Joe?" "I think he's probably learned his lesson by now." Their laughter caught everyone's attention as they walked out of Nash's office. Back at their desks, both Harvey and Cassidy began going through their paperwork trying to figure out how Chamber's was able to get to Mackenzie. Though neither was truly ready to accept it, it was becoming more and more evident that one of their own had betrayed them. Over and over they searched through the files. Every time that Chamber's men were on to them, the only people that knew their exact whereabouts were Harvey, Cassidy, Antwon and Joe. Cassidy had begun to feel sick at the thought of traitor in the SIU, especially someone that close to her. Eventually she looked at the clock and realized that it was almost 3am. She nudged Harvey who was almost asleep in a stack of files. "Hey Harv, you should head home. You look pretty beat." "Nah, I am good. I just need some coffee." Groggily he made his way to the coffee pot and shook his head as the brown sludge oozed into his cup. After he put the cup to his lips, he realized that the goo that stared back at him was about six cups of sugar shy of actually being drinkable. Still he gulped it down and went back to the papers on his desk. He was determined to figure this out if it killed him. As the morning dwindled on, Harvey and Cassidy began to see a pattern develop. It was about7:30 that morning when Harvey came to the horrifying realization, of who their betrayer was. As if completely in sync with one another, Harvey and Cassidy looked up from their desks. They could tell by their expressions, that nothing good was going to come of their revelation. Later that morning both Harvey and Cassidy went to talk to Nash, about their findings. "I hope that you two are wrong about this. Because I would hate to see him go down like this." "Your not the only one that hopes we're wrong Nash, but Cass and I have gone over and over this. He has to be the one." "For his sake, hell for the everyone's sake I hope that you two are wrong. Go ahead with plan, we'll wait and see if he takes the bait." It was raining that night and Harvey sat up in his bed wondering about what would happen tomorrow. He had hoped with everything in him that he would be dead wrong about this, but it all seemed to fit. Taking down a friend was something he had hoped never to have to do. Unable to get any sleep, he went to the living room and flipped on the TV. After going through all his channels, he muttered to himself "Why do I even bother? I have over 70 channels, heaven forbid at least one of them have something decent on." After flipping off the TV he walked towards the kitchen, but managed to fall over King along the way. After several hours of pacing and staring at the angel, he decided he would just get dressed and head over to the SIU before he drove himself insane. When he arrived, he was surprised to see Cassidy seated at her esk. "What are you doing here?" He asked "I could ask you the same question." "Couldn't sleep. And you?" "The same...if we're right-" "I know. The heat this is going to bring. I have been thinking about it all night." They continued talking until they saw Joe and Antwon enter the building. The next few hours seemed to go in slow motion for Harvey and Cassidy. They kept themselves busy with paperwork and such, but there was only one thing on their minds. There was a loud crash of thunder outside, and then lightening struck the barge. For about an hour there was no power, and the rain just kept pouring. "I wonder if this is an omen or something. You know like in the movies." "Cassidy, my dear you are completely insane." "Well Harvey it has to mean something. I mean look out there. I just have a really bad feeling about this." "The rain doesn't matter, we still have to do this." "I just want to get it over with." With that they walked away. "Is everything in place?" Nash asked over the worsening connection on his cell phone. "Yeah. We're all set on this end. And you?" "It's ready Cass, I am sending them out now. You and Harv be careful." Nash put the phone back in his jacket and moved the Cuda to a dryer place, and made another phone call. "Yeah, Joe it's Nash. I need you and Antwon to head over to that warehouse on Masters and Culver. Harvey and Cass need some backup, they found some of Chamber's men hold up there." "No problemo Nashman, we are on are way." After the call to Joe, he waited there hoping that his friends were wrong about their accusations. Within in minutes someone's career may be over, and at this moment he wished he were not the Captain. Harvey checked the perimeter while Cassidy waited in the car. Through the rearview mirror she saw Antwon's car approach. "So where's Harv?" Joe asked "He's checking things out. He should be back in a sec." "So what is the plan?" "Well, you and Joe can cover the back, and Harv and I will take the front. Nash said we need to get these guys alive so we can find out how Chambers knew where to find us." Harvey made his way back to the car and they quickly set their plan in motion. Antwon scanned the room as he entered through the back with Joe not far behind. Nothing but the pitter-patter of rain drops on the roof could be heard. Quickly they worked their way through the building, until they reached a narrow hallway. They heard the voices more clearly as they moved closer. When they reached the end of the hallway, they readied themselves to move in. Between the first shout and the last shot, Joe never had the chance to figure out exactly what happened before he went down. When Harvey and Cassidy entered from the other side, they almost bought it themselves. When the smoke cleared. it was obvious that this was not what they has expected. Three people were dead, and two were wounded. After calling it in, Harvey and Cassidy did their best to figure out exactly what happened, while also doing what they could to keep Joe alive until the ambulance arrived. * * * |
