Heroes And Angels Part 5 |
Standing there looking out at the water, Nash felt something was off. He didn’t know what, but he would soon find out. The car that Chambers described drove up and pulled in next to the Cuda. Frank got out and went around to get Rachel. She was wearing a baggy jacket and her mouth was taped. He pushed her towards Nash and then quickly got into the car. Rolling down the window he spoke. "Chamber’s says when he gets clear, he’ll leave the other one where you can find him." Grabbing hold of Rachel he watched as Frank drove away. He untied her hands and pulled off the tape covering her mouth, and she screamed. "Don’t touch me!" "Easy sister. What’s going on here?" She opened the jacket to show him the bomb. "Oh my god..." was all he could think to say at that moment. "Chambers has the trigger, he says that if you don’t give him what he wants, he’ll set this off and then kill Harvey." She was out of breath and started to fall to the ground. Nervously he caught her and helped her into his car. "What are we gonna do Nash?" she said trying to hide the fear in her eyes. "First I am going to call the bomb squad. Then I am going to pray this damn thing doesn’t blow up in my car." *** Slowly Harvey began to open his eyes and as the blurriness faded he could see the frame of a young woman feverishly working at a counter a few feet away. He tried to move, but his arms and legs felt strapped down. The distinct scent of formaldehyde invaded his nostrils, as he began to squirm in his restraints. Nervously the young woman turned around and nearly screamed when she saw Harvey had awakened. He managed to get out a faint "Where am I?" and the woman walked towards him cautiously. "They forgot about your claustrophobia when they put you in the dark room. Frank brought you here when you passed out at his feet." There was something so radiant about her smile as she began to take his blood pressure and check his IV. "I honestly don’t know where we are, but they use this room as a sort of infirmary." Harvey smiled back at her and then tried to speak again. "Who is ‘they’?" "Mr. Chambers and his men." "What about you? What’s your name?" She began to look away from Harvey and a frightened expression came over her face. Before she could answer, Frank entered the room. "Hey is he gonna be ok?" "Yeah Frank, he’ll live. Next time please remember no more tight spaces for this one." She shot Frank a half smile as he went towards Harvey. "I know. I know. I told you before, we just forgot." "Let me keep him here for a little bit longer. The meds I gave him will kick in and then he’s yours." "All right sis. I’ll be back to get him in about an hour. Will that do?" "Perfect." With that he walked back out of the room. The look of confusion on Harvey’s face made the woman giggle to herself. "You mean to tell me ‘Tiny’ there is your brother?" "I know it is hard to believe, but yes. He is my little brother." "Excuse me??? Little brother???" "Don’t let his size fool you, he’s harmless" Harvey winced as he began to feel the pain in his back where her brother had ever so gently nudged him. "You never did answer my question...What’s your name?" "Adelita, but everyone calls me Angel. And you?" "Harvey. Harvey Leek." He was looking into her eyes, and all he could see was her smile. The way the light glittered off her cheeks, he wasn’t sure if is was the medication or what, but he was simply mesmerized. "You must be the other cop they brought in." She stood over him and her hand brushed across his chest as he watched her intently. "I shouldn’t do this, but I know these restraints have to be killing you by now. So if you promise not to run, I’ll untie you." "I guess I can handle that. Right now my head hurts so bad, I am not sure I’d get too far anyway." He tried to laugh, but the pain stopped him. *** Rachel sat patiently as a member of the bomb squad checked over the vest she was wearing. The look on his face said more than she wanted to know. "Well there is good news and bad news..." he said looking over at Nash "Give us the bad news first." He replied "This is quite the impressive piece of work. I have never seen anything like it...It seems to be wired to some sort of computer chip, this actually looks a bit like the prototype Harvey was toying with a few months ago...but we can’t take this off with out detonating it, and we can’t disarm it because the wiring is too sensitive. We have to get to the trigger before we can disarm the vest." "What prototype??" Nash and Rachel said with puzzled expressions. "Oh a few months ago we borrowed Harvey so that we could work an a computer activated disarming system. Some really high tech stuff. One of his professors from Berkeley was also giving us a hand...The trigger appears to be the same type of model, but the wiring is a bit more intricate and complex." "So you mean to tell me that this thing is run by a computer?" Rachel asked "Yeah, basically the computer chip acts as a timer. Whoever has the trigger uses the computer to set the timer and activate the chip, but it is not just any computer. The hardware needed to put this together is so high tech, only about a fifty people in the entire world know how to use it. Just from what I can see this thing could blow up a few city blocks easy. If Harvey were here he could probably disarm it without any problems." "Just great. The one man that can disarm this, and we have no idea where he is. So what’s the good news?" Rachel shot back "They haven’t detonated it yet." The man looked at her with a sarcastic grin. She could have strangled him, but at that moment she had more important things on her mind. "So is there anything we can do?" Nash asked "At the moment...just pray whoever has the trigger doesn’t get the urge to arm this puppy." "Well, as long as there is nothing we can do about this, what are we gonna do about Harvey?" She shouted as she gently tugged at the vest. "We aren’t going to do anything about Harv. You are going to stay here, and the rest of us will see about Harvey." "Come on Nash. I wanna help." "Sister this is non-negotiable. In case you forgot, you have a bomb strapped to your chest. I don’t want to accidentally blow up a few city blocks just because you want to help." She shot him a rather hurt look. "I know you mean well, Rach but you’re gonna have to sit this one out." "There’s gotta be something I can do?" she pleaded *** Sitting up in the bed, Harvey rubbed his wrists and began to move around a bit. He was happy to finally be unstraped. His curiosity about Angel was growing with each passing moment. Watching her work at the counter fascinated him. "Thanks for cuttin’ me loose." he said as he eyed her hands carefully moving around the different chemicals on the counter. "Anytime." "So what are you working on? Or should I ask?" "It is a...well...maybe you shouldn’t ask." she turned and gave him an nervous smile. "You seem like such a nice person, how’d you get mixed up in all this?" he asked as he walked around the room. "Who says I am mixed up? I like where I am." she responded indignantly. "I didn’t mean to offend you...I am sorry I guess I over stepped a little." With a pouty look he flashed his baby blues, and she shook her head as if to say she forgave him. "I don’t know enough about you to say what I did." "That’s right, you don’t, but I’ll forgive you this time." The two began to laugh and then continued to get to know one another. The two carried on for the rest of the hour. She was careful not to tell Harvey too much about herself, but it was getting harder to do as he worked his beautiful blue-eyed charm on her. Finally she looked at the clock, and saw that it was time for her brother to be returning. "I better put these back on before Frank gets back." She said as she reached for the restraints. "Darn, I was just getting used to my freedom." They shared a laugh over his sarcastic remark as she quickly placed the restraints back in place. "Someone might think of this as a bit kinky." He couldn’t resist throwing that comment in as she fastened the last strap. "I can do some pretty fascinating things with a beaker and whip." She kindly shot back. He looked at her with a smile, and was about to respond when Frank came in the door. "Everything ok Angel?" He asked "Yep...All is well." "So is he ready to go now?" After she had taken out his IV, she told her brother to take him away. She felt bad though, because it had been a long time since anyone besides Frank had been so kind to her. In a way she felt like he was the lucky one, because at least he had a chance of being able to leave. Angel was trapped there, and she knew there was no way out for her. *** Cassidy was getting impatient with the printer as she waited for her file to finish printing. Hurriedly she grabbed what was there and asked Ronnie to bring the rest outside when and if it ever finished. She made her way out of the barge to the small area where Nash had placed Rachel so that she could attempt to help. "Well this is most of the file, Ronnie will bring the rest whenever the darn printer finishes with it...looks like this guy was pretty popular up in Jersey." She said. "Frank Munoz...He’s been a small time thug for the Turelli family since he was a teenager. Never been in much trouble though. Has a pretty small rapsheet. His sister now, she’s a real interesting read." Cassidy handed Rachel and Nash a second set of papers as she continued to fill them in. "Name is Adelita Angelica Munoz. She’s a graduate of Harvard. Went to med school there, and was a resident at a hospital in Boston until two years ago when she disappeared. Since then she has been spotted with Frank on several occasions, and also recently with Chambers." She finished up by showing them the surveillance photos. "Now what would Chambers want with a small time thug and his sis the doctor?" Nash asked to no one in particular. "You got me." Rachel said as she fumbled through the rest of the file which Ronnie had brought out a few minutes before. Then it hit her like lightening striking a copper wire. "Mackenzie’s parent’s were chemists right?" she said Cassidy was a bit shocked to hear his name, since she had done everything in the last few hours not to think about the boy. She nodded her head in agreement, as Rachel continued. "And he had them killed because they were gonna roll on his bioweapons project...so maybe what he wanted was another chemist to pick up where they left off." "Maybe so, but then the question is why would she do it?" Nash added *** Back at the hospital, Inger waited patiently for Joe to open his eyes. Most of the day had gone by and he had not moved once. The doctors came in and out, and she was becoming more worried as the looks on their faces became more hopeless. They had been together over twenty years, and she was not about to give up on him yet, but her fears were mounting. The next doctor entered the room and checked his chart and saw the look on her face. "I am sure he’ll be ok Mrs. Dominguez. Sometimes it just takes a little patience." He tried to reassure her. Another nurse entered and re-checked Joe’s vitals. "Thank you Dr. Myers. It’s just that, I see him like this, and he looks as though he could wake up any minute, but he won’t open his eyes no matter what I do." She tried to hide the tear that rolled down her cheek. The doctor took her hand and gently squeezed it. He wished there was more he could do for her, but there wasn’t. As turned his head back to the monitors, he noticed a slight blip in Joe’s heart rate, and it began to increase. "Doctor, I think you should take a look at this." the nurse said, and Dr. Myers quickly joined her. "What’s wrong?" Inger inquired with a frightened look, as she nervously tried to get closer to the bed. Suddenly all the monitors began to beep, and the nurse ran to the hall to get some more help. Inger moved back in fear. Dear God she prayed, not yet. Don’t take him from me yet. Another nurse took her arm and led her out the room. The tears welled up in her eyes, as she stared in the window. She jumped when she felt a pair of hands touch her shoulders. Turning around she saw JJ’s face and buried her head in his chest. All day they had been trying to reach him, but with no luck. At last having JJ there she finally felt some comfort. "What happened? I didn’t get the message until an hour ago. It said Dad was shot, and for me to get here as soon as possible. I got here as quick as I could." His head turned slightly to see the doctors feverishly working on his father and he sank into the chair beside the door. "He’s not gonna die is he?" he asked looking up at her with tears in his eyes "No dear. Your father is far to strong a man to die like this." She said as she placed her palm on JJ’s cheek. *** A few minutes after Harvey and Frank left, Angel went back to her own room a few doors down. Sitting on her bed, thoughts of Harvey ran through her mind. She sat there looking in the mirror as she took down her hair and began to brush it softly. His deep blue eyes would forever be embedded in her memory. The sweet way he joked with her, had made her special. So caught up in her thoughts, she nearly missed the sound of a click at the door handle. When she turned, her face became rather pale at seeing the man in the doorway. As he came away from the door, she heard the tap of the lock being turned. Holding her breath a bit, she cringed as he pulled her close and wrapped his large arms around her. She knew what he wanted without even asking, and she resisted as she always did. When she turned her face away from his, he gripped her more tightly. He might get what he wanted from her, but she’d burn in hell before she gave in willingly. The feel of his lips roughly pressed against hers made her skin crawl. He tore at her blouse, and then at her skirt. She tried to push him away, but he angrily hit across her face. Hitting the floor with a strong thud, she screamed. With a firm grip on her left arm he dragged her back up and again slapped her face. Tearing at her clothes again he forced himself on her, and again she fought him. This time though, it was no use. Yet again he would get what he came for, and she would be left crying after Antwon was finished. *** Harvey scanned the walls as he was led to another room by Frank. He still couldn’t shake the feeling he knew where he was. Something about these walls and that smell seemed so familiar to him. Frank continued to lead him and stopped briefly to warn him that the next corridor got a bit tight. Harvey was thankful for the warning as he went on, but not knowing where he was had started to get to him. Finally after getting to the door at the end of the corridor, they entered and Harvey stared blankly at the man standing before him. "It’s been a while." Harvey said as he looked around the room "I thought this place looked familiar." "Never could fool you Harv. I guess you know me too well." the man said as he smiled at him. |
