Heroes And Angels
Part 6
Waking up the next morning next to Antwon, Angel gathered herself and walked over to the mirror. Staring at the bruise on her cheek, she knew that her make-up would not be able to cover it. Seeing Antwon begin to stir she quickly got back into the bed next to him. He draped his arm around her and pulled her close. She felt the urge to throw up at the thought of him holding her.

"Hey babe, sorry about last night." he said as he turned her around to see the bruise.

"That’s ok. It was my fault." she laid her head on his chest

Just one more lie, to go along with all the others she told him as well as herself. She thought they would make it easier for her to deal with him, but it never worked. He wanted her to love him, but that would never happen. The closer he held her, the more sick she felt. As he began to to kiss her, she tried to find something, anything else in her mind to keep her from losing it completely. Her mind focused on the blue-eyed man she met the night before. His warmth and kindness had brightened her day. Never before had she felt so comfortable with one person. Only Frank had been able to make her smile the way she did with Harvey.

Antwon was confused by the smile on her face. She hardly ever smiled when she was with him anymore. Angrily he got up and dressed himself.

"What’s wrong?" she asked as he buttoned up his shirt

"Nothing! I just have some work to do. What do you care anyway?!" he shot back at her

Lying there on the bed she was actually relieved he was going to leave. After their tussle last night, she was rather sore. She watched as he shut the door behind him, breathed a sigh of relief as she went and locked the door.

Harvey had spent the night on a recliner in the cold room he had been led to. After his conversation with Chambers, he was unsure of what to think. Seeing Chambers again had made him think about Mackenzie and he felt so lost. At least he could say for sure where he was now. Getting a look out the barred window, he could see that he was in the old Chamber’s mansion. It belonged to Chamber’s family going back a couple generations. Harvey had visited here a few times before when he was younger, it was a historical landmark that Chambers had made a tourist attraction. Knowing he was only a few miles from the city, he tried to figure a way for him to get out. Deep in his thoughts he was startled when Chambers entered the room.

"Sorry to bother you. Did I wake you?" he asked as he shut the door behind him

"No, I was awake."

"Don’t bother with an escape plan, there’s no way for you to get out." Chambers walked over to the window, and began to look out.

"Where’s McCabe?"

"She should be back at the SIU at the moment." The expression on Chamber’s face bothered Harvey and he was sure there was more to this than he was saying. "Don’t worry Harv, I haven’t done anything to her...yet."

"What the heck is that suppossed to mean?" Harvey shot him an angry look, as he sat up on the recliner. Chambers was toying with him and he knew it. After all that had happened in the last few hours, he was in no mood for games.

"Let’s just say that as long as Nash does as I tell him, she’ll be just fine. But if he chooses otherwise, she’ll be...in pieces." Harvey wanted to reach out and clobber him.

"Why are you doing this John?" Harvey asked as he got up from the chair

"When we were in college you would have jumped at the chance to be a part of something like this." Chambers got closer to him.

"Something like what?"

As Rachel and Cassidy sorted through the truck load of files that Nash had left them, they both stopped short when they came across a manilla folder neither had seen before.

"Hmmm...where did you get this one Cass?" Rachel asked as she started to pick it up.

"It was sitting on Harvey’s desk with all the other Chambers files. I just grabbed them all and brought them out here...Actually I almost missed it, it was under some other stuff on his desk, and I sort of knocked most of his desk over when I tried to pick these up. When I picked up the stuff that fell, I saw it lying there. It had Chamber’s name on it, so I put it in with the others." Cassidy got a guilty look on her face and started to twitch a bit.

"What else did you do?" Rachel said noticing her nervousness.

"Well...please don’t tell Harvey, but...I sort of broke that Greatful Dead key chain he had sitting on the corner of his desk." muffling her laughter, Rachel patted her on the back and told her not to worry.

"With as much stuff as he has on his desk, if he notices, it won’t be for at least a month, and even then I am sure he’ll think he just misplaced it." They both began to laugh a bit, but that ended rather abruptly when Rachel read a few lines of the file still in her hand

"This can’t be right?" she muttered as Cassidy looked on in curiosity

"What?...Oh my god" Cassidy exclamed as she too read the beginning of the report.

After Inger’s call that morning, Nash hurried to the hospital. His hands were shaking as he turned the wheel into the busy parking lot. He was terrified to lose Joe. For all they had been through, he was one of the few people that he could truly call a friend. Whenever he needed him, Joe was there. Even if it was with some new hairbrained scheme, he’d be there. There was nothing he wanted more than to walk into that building, and get out of that elevator, and find Joe sitting in that hospital bed whining because the food tasted bad. But in his heart he knew that wouldn’t happen. They way Inger sounded on the phone was as though there was no time left.

Getting off the elevator he saw JJ sitting outside the door to his father’s room with Lucia fast asleep on his lap. As he approached, he saw Inger exit the room with tears filling her eyes. He stretched his arms out to her and she sobbed into his shoulder. The butterflies in Nash’s stomach were increasing as he peered over her head and into Joe’s room. Quietly she led him inside, and he froze when he saw all the tubes and monitors he was hooked up to.

"What happened?" he said as he choked back the tears

"The doctors say that his lungs collapsed, and that he can’t breath on his own now. They wanted to take him back up to surgery, but he isn’t stable enough. They say he might not make it through the day..." she trailed off into more tears as Nash held her tightly. "I can’t lose him Nash. Next week is our anniversary, we were supposed to go on a second honeymoon." again she sobbed.

Nash honestly didn’t have a clue as to what to do at that particular moment. Part of him wanted to grab Joe and yell at him to wake up, and another part wanted to fall to the ground in tears.

Harvey stared at John for the longest time waiting for an answer. He was almost too afraid to hear the response.

"You remember when we were in college, we wanted to change the world. We had a vision of how it should have been. No war, no crime, no poverty, everything was right. We thought if we joined the force we’d have a real chance at fixing things. We were wrong about that-"

"No we weren’t." Chambers looked at Harvey and shook his head

"After everything you’ve seen, and everything you’ve done as cop, how can you look me square in the eyes and say that?"

"It’s because of all that, that I can say we weren’t wrong. We did have a vision, but making it real takes time. Things are messed up, and there’s no quick fix. It’s not like you can just get rid of a few countries and everything will be better. Whatever you’re planning to do with these weapons, won’t work." Harvey got up and went towards the window.

"You always were so niave Harv. You’ve never let yourself see how things really are. For as long as I can remember you have let everyone walk over you, because you didn’t want to see who they really were.. Even your so called ex-wife Bonnie who was supposed to be in love with you, she tore you to shredds. I feel sorry for you Harv. By the time you see the big picture, the movie is at its end." he could see the anger boiling in Harvey’s face at the mention of his ex-wife.

"You’re the one that started taking bribes and ended up being exactly what you said you never wanted to become." he shot back

"No that’s where you’re wrong. I am not that at all. I am so much more now. With the use of these bioweapons and your mind, I’ll be able to fix everything just like we wanted to do when were younger."

"You’re absolutely insane if you think I am going to help you with this!"

"Are you sure about that? I can be persuaded to...motivate you...if necessary."

Harvey definitely didn’t like the sound of that threat. Chambers knew where he was most vulnerable, and he wouldn’t hesitate to use it against him. More than ever he knew that he had to get out of there and soon.

Rachel had suspected their might have been a connection between Harvey and Chambers, but she wasn’t quite sure what it could be. Reading this file made it all clear, but she didn’t like what she saw. She finished the file, and handed it to Cassidy. Looking over some photos that had been put in the folder as well, her jaw dropped.

"This is so unreal. I never knew Harvey was suspected of being a dirty cop." Cassidy commented as she flipped through the file.

‘I can’t believe that no one bothered to mention that Chambers used to be a cop, let alone he was Harvey’s partner."

This was all making Rachel a bit more nervous, and considering she had a bomb strapped to her chest for almost 24 hours, more nervous was not something she wanted to be.

"We have to call Nash. This changes everything." Rachel’s head was beginning to spin. Seeing Ronnie making his way towards them, she hoped he had some good news.

"We got a list of all Chambers property and holdings McCabe. Have a look, see if anything sounds like where he might have had you." he handed her the list

"I’m just not sure. Being blindfolded half the time didn’t help matters."

Angel hurriedly mixed and measured the nearby chemicals, as she stood at the counter. Nothing seemed to make much sense to her at the moment. She was beginning to wonder how she had ended up in that laboratory, in her lab coat holding a beaker of acid that could probably kill every living thing with in a ten mile raduis if she wasn’t careful with it. Remebering the previous night, and all her encounters, she began to feel a wave of guilt. Wondering if there was a way out had become an everyday occurence for her, and she had yet to come up with an answer to her question. As Frank entered to lab, she looked up to notice the horrified expression on his face as he saw the bruise on her face. He moved towards her, but she pushed him away.

"I can’t let you do this anymore sis. You let that bastard do this because of me, and it has to stop." he looked in her eyes before she turned them away

"This is just as much my fault Frank-"

"The hell it is! You wouldn’t be here right now if it weren’t for me. Chamber’s wouldn’t have you working on this damned psychotic plan of his, if I hadn’t taken you out of Boston like I did." he took her hands and held them tightly "This is all my fault, and I am going to make this right for you." he began to head for the door, but Angel quickly stepped in front of him.

"No Frank. Listen to me. This isn’t your fault. I don’t want you to do anything. I’ll deal with Chambers when the time is right, and as far as Antwon goes..." she touched her bruised cheek. "This will go away. He can’t hurt me unless I let him. I know that you care about me little brother, but I can handle this. Now please don’t do something stupid. I don’t want to see you hurt."

"But I get to see you hurt and that’s ok?!" he knew she was right, but it pained him to see his only sister battered as she was.

"I told you, he can’t hurt me unless I let him." wrapping her arms around him she hugged him tightly.

"When this is over, I promise I am gonna make things right for you." as she held him, she prayed that they would both still be alive to hold on to each other after this was over.

Nash was surprised to see Cassidy step off the elevator as he sat outside the room with JJ and Lucia.

"What’s up sweetie?" he asked as she kissed his cheek

"Needed to get a hold of you, but your didn’t anwser the cell." reaching into his pocket he noticed that the battery was dead.

"Guess I forgot to recharge it last night." he sighed and looked into Joe’s window.

"How is he doing?" Nash quietly got up and moved back towards the elevator with Cassidy.

"Not so good."

"He’s gonna make it right?" he wanted to say yes, but he knew the chances were getting less and less that would happen.

Cassidy read the look on her father’s face and took a deep breath to hold back her tears.

"What was it you wanted to talk to me about?"

"Rachel and I were going through the Chambers files looking for a lead, and we came across a file that Harvey had left on his desk, and...well. did you know that Chambers was a cop? and that he was Harvey’s partner?"

Nash froze in front of the elevator. For a moment he was silent. He had never made the connection until that moment, but it was all becoming clear now.
