The Augustan Age:
The Rise of the English Novel

Content:

Course Description

ab 3. Semester,   Mo 16-18

Strictly speaking, the Augustan Age in English literary history covers the period from 1660 to 1750 but is sometimes extended to 1780 to include the Age of Johnson and to take into consideration one of the most important literary developments of the late 17th and 18th century: the constitution of the English novel. We will read major novels of this epoch, discuss the evolution of various types of the novel genre and explore the social, cultural and literary background of the period.

Requirements for a Schein (Literaturwissenschaft Grundstudium): oral presentation (Referat mit Thesenpapier) and a written version of this (10 pages). Alternatively: oral presentation and oral examination.

Some Possible Topics for Presentation:

• How do narratives undermine the moral function of the novel? Examples: Moll Flanders and Pamela

• How does the novel differ from the romance? With specific reference to Clara Reeves

• Is Tristram Shandy a digression in the history of fiction or the most representative of novels?

• The functions of rules and rule-breaking in 18th century novels

• Science and literature: inventions, influences, indirect impact

• Presentations on individual authors, their work, and their specific contribution to the rise of the novel

• The role of women in the rise of the novel (e.g. was Aphra Behn's Oroonoko the first English novel?)

• The difference between author and narrator, and the question of the reliability of the narrator

• Earlier novels in Europe (e.g. Spain, France, Germany)

• Your own idea?
