Chapter Five

"Who are you?!" Dave demanded, stabbing an accusing finger at the Commander. "Why?"

"I didn't kill Clover," Small said, still smiling. "End program…"

            No…Sylvia couldn't believe her ears.

The scene faded away…Sylvia, Dave, Diane, Reff and Dan stood alone in the holodeck with Commander Small.

"Usually, the first classes to pass in the morning never manage to solve the puzzle." Small said. "I must commend you, excellent work."

"Hell, no…" Dave stared around the holodeck in horror. "This was a simulation???"

"You were beamed in here during your sleep," Small explained. "The program was written by Rear-Admiral Patrickson…"

            "I'm not surprised…" Sylvia muttered.

"Fun, isn't it?" Small grinned. "And you passed the test with ease, well done."

"I'm overjoyed…" Dave said, obviously annoyed at having being toyed with.

            One week later…

"I have to say…You've impressed me." Rear-Admiral Patrickson smiled at the officers amassed in front of him. "We have never had such a high pass rate since 2255! 100 percent of the officers here are becoming elite operatives! I can't congratulate you enough. Now, since you will all be on active-duty, I'm going to feel a lot safer when I go to bed at night. You are the best of the best, and I'm sure that Starfleet, and the Federation will benefit from your talents. Well done and welcome to elite operations."

They all clapped and cheered the Rear-Admiral.

"So…This is the end…" Dave said.

"Sure is," Dan smiled. "It's been fun…"

"And less fun," Diane reminded with a wink.

"So where are you all off to?" Dave asked.

"You know we can't tell you that…" Diane said. "Top secret information, you know."

            He sighed: "Yeah…"

"Well, we might see each other again, you never know." Dan said. "I certainly hope so."

            "Me too," Sylvia nodded.

"Me three," Dave added with a small smile.

They came to the transporter room and said their goodbyes. Sylvia was the last to depart; the Valiant had just come into orbit and was ready to pick her up.

On board the ship, Kline was waiting for her in the transporter room.

"Sylvia!" He smiled once she had been totally rematerialized. "We've had a little adventure while you were away, we could have used you at the conn but we had to settle on someone else."

            "Darn," She frowned.

"But congratulations," He smiled. "I'm happy to have you back, and officially part of Intel."

"Glad to be here," She said.

"You'll have to tell us everything," Kline said. "I'm sure Patrickson was as tricky as ever, right?"

            "Yeah…" She nodded. "Tricky indeed…"
