Back

Raven was pleased with how her life was going. She was able to move between worlds, explore, and learn. Things that women of her status just weren't apt to be allowed to do on her own homeworld.

She also didn't much feel like sharing, going back there. She did return, several times. But the place left her feeling cold and lonely, gave her no satisfaction after a while.

So Raven began hanging out with the other Sangers, and ... some of their friends. Friends was a little strong a word. Shy after all was a bit more 'friendly' in ways that Raven all but blushed about. When she gave birth some months after their little... experiment... it was to a beautiful girl. Shy was the one to take care of the child though, Raven would visit.

But her travels had barely started. She visited the Healing Den's chart rooms - a place where she could imbed into the minds of her dragons (well, into Arrista's, anyway, and from there to Jaliren) the location of a dragonry to teleport to.

In this way, she bounced her way around the multiverse. The Nexus became more and more Raven's home.

She reached Darkling Dawn with a smile on her face and a tune in her throat. After all she could still perform for whatever audiences would listen, and still earn her keep wherever she went. She felt a kind of pride that her singing could impress that many people.

Darkling Dawn had a dimmer side to it though. After a performance and several coins dropped into her collection, Raven walked through the corridors until she found a place that made her stomach twist. Lonely dragon calls came from caverns, their quality of desperation or fear troubled the singer.

What is that? Arrista asked, I sense horrible things... Why!

It is none of our concern, Raven heard Jaliren complain back to her. Don't worry about them.

"I am worried," Raven said, aloud, and walked with strength and curiosity toward the dens. In each there was a young dragonet, seemingly abandoned by their intended bonds. When she came across a particular one, a blue male who hid his head below his wing pretending to sleep, something in Raven snapped.

"It's all right," she said softly. He didn't stir, save for the tip of his tail. "You don't have to be alone any more. If you want, you can come along with me."

WHAT?! Bellowed Jaliren mentally, he could even be heard outside. He was quickly stifled by an irate Arrista.

The dragon moved a bit, seemingly tightening his grip on his own neck, by his wingsail. Undaunted, Raven stepped in toward him. She knelt, and lifted one of his wing fingers off where she guessed his head was. "There you are," she said with a smile.

Leave me alone! The blue grumbled, trying to shift away from her, but she wouldn't be stopped. He was still quite young, but it looked like he'd done a bit of growing since his hatching. His skin was tattered, though there were people volunteering to take care of the abandoned dragons in any given place, no one could really do all the work all the time.

"I have to get that skin of yours soft and healthy again, before we go anywhere," Raven said. She looked around and saw the oils and cloth which were used in this process. She gently started applying the oils, and to her amazement the dragon shied away. "Now look, you need someone to take care of you, and I'd like to help."

Well I don't need anyone to help me!

See! He doesn't need anyone, we should go! Jaliren put in, which only made Raven more determined than ever that this abandoned dragonet was coming home with them to the Healing Den.

"You have to admit, this does feel good," Raven said, as she smoothed the skin on his back with the thick oil. Eventually, half an hour later, the dragonet was standing up and opening his wing sails for her to finish the job.

That ... is kind of nice... I am Siahonith, who are you?

Raven introduced herself, and told him of her existing bonds. She left out the bits where Jaliren was a pain in the butt. She wasn't sure at all how he'd react to a youngling male, now that he'd been old enough to keep himself under control.

Raven made the necessary agreements and signed paperwork, and prepared to head back to the Healing Den with Siahonith. But before they could leave, she wanted to give another performance. She was feeling nice, feeling positive. Jaliren was hardly speaking to her let alone to Arrista - who seemed to want to mother the young blue. And of course, the snubbed Siahonith was of two distinct minds about the whole thing.

One of the things she tried to do was mediate between the dragons, but when she was singing, even they shut up and listened. Jaliren's mind sort of became tamer, sweeter. Arrista's gave a light counterpart to her mind's voice. And Siahonith... had never heard such a thing before.

He did not distract Raven while she sang, but when she was done and collecting her things he interrupted her with a number of questions. What was that? Can he do it? He'd be terrible at it, he berated himself about it. Raven chuckled and gathered her things to head home. "You'll sing fine to someone some day, Siahonith," she told him when they were ready to leave. The hatchling was small enough that Arrista could carry him in her forepaws, and Raven could still sit snugly with her things on the yellow's back.

But she'd noticed something that had been deposited into her collection sack, instead of money or local items, there was an egg! Her surriel snaked down around her arm and sniffed at the small egg. "Let's go home, I think Baeris will know what it is," she told the dragons, and they teleported away through the Nexus.

On arrival, Siahonith shivered and shook - it was after all a much longer trip to a youngling that had never done it before. It wasn't like just teleporting from one side of the mountain to the other. Plus he was much too young to know how anyway. Jaliren chuffed that he needed to toughen up, Arrista chided Jaliren, and Siahonith clung to Raven for some support.

"Come on, let's meet Baeris. She'll be interested to see you, and I have to ask her about this egg." Raven told the little blue, "perk up, you'll fit right in here. There are many dragons and people, and they don't mind answering questions."

The blue fell in line behind the slender woman, who went first to the infirmary where Baeris usually was, but then had to go elsewhere, down to the entertainment room where she caught up with the healer. Baeris looked over the little blue, tsked that his skin was in such shape.

"I know, he's an abandonling," Raven explained. They started talking and one of the smaller dragonets hanging out started trying to get Siahonith to play. It was uphill work, but by the time Baeris' own rukels had come out in curiosity, Raven's egg was now obviously breaking.

"It's a rukel," Baeris said, a moment after the pair Savannah and Scarlet came on the scene. Only Scarlet flew, since Savannah had no wings. But they both chirped and purred, running up and down Baeris' long arms. "A pretty one," she said, suddenly grabbing both with her long fingers and gently but firmly holding them still. They were all quite tiny, though full grown, so Raven knew that this little dark-furred rukel creature would not be a bother even to Boa the surriel.

"He's really pretty!" Raven said, as the creature dried and began to fluff out. "I think... Sonnet, I got him for a song."

The women laughed and let the rukels play, while the dragons all around them sniffed at Siahonith and tried making him welcome. He was a bit of a dilemma, because even the friendliest of the dragons - Dulath - found he was mistrustful and self-deprecating.

"The poor thing is a mess," the apple green dragoness said when she came to their side. "But with time I think he'll be okay..." She looked sidelong at Raven, "if Jaliren and Arrista don't keep him in two directions that is..."

"I know, I know..." Raven sighed, but she relished the time they would all have to watch the blue grow up and adjust to life with a family again.
