JUVENTUS: ITALIAN CHAMPIONS!
With the sacking of Carlo
Ancelotti in the end of the 00/01 season, Marcello Lippi returned to Juventus
after two and a half years away from the bianconeri. He had a very good
start, winning the first three games and leading the league until the 4th
week. After that, the team went through one of their dark periods on the
season (there were two). They had trouble winning the matches against the
"big" squads, but they did a great job with the "little" squads.
And it was exactly one of
these matches that Lippi considered to be the turning point of the season
for his team. Week 32: Inter was beating Chievo 2-1, Roma and Milan were
on 0-0, and Juve couldn't get to open the score at Piacenza. There were
three minutes left for the final whistle when Pavel Nedved had a beautiful
shot from outside the area and scored the winner for Juve, and Chievo tied
the match right after that. Juve one point away from Inter. On the last
week of the championship, Juventus did their job winning 2-0 at Udine,
and Lazio gave them a big hand as they won 4-2 at home against a suicidal
Inter Milan. The 26th scudetto was meant to be.
On the Champions League,
the bianconeri managed to reach the second group stage but failed to advance
to the quarter-finals. On the Coppa Italia, Lippi managed to take his boys
to the final, but a 2-1 win at the Delle Alpi was not enough to assure
the title as the gialloblù won 1-0 at home. And yet it was a very
positive season for Juve: not only they won a title which didn't come since
the 97/98 season as they have a lot to hope from the future.
