| New York born Vin Diesel started his career as a child actor in the Theatre for the New City. It all started when Vin Diesel and childhood friends were caught in a Manhattan theatre trying to vandalize it. "This woman caught us. Instead of reporting us to the police she gave us a script to learn and paid us $20 a week to be in plays." Diesel continued to work on stage in off-Broadway shows, gaining a great deal of experience, but making very little money. "When I was 19, I started working as a bouncer for several clubs. It was really the only work suitable for me. I had an imposing look and the right physique and was not co-ordinated enough to be a waiter." During the day, Vin Diesel would go to open auditions and take acting classes. He also studied English at Hunter College where he began writing screenplays and making films. He wrote and produced autobiographical short films, Multi-Racial and Stays. Both films made it to Cannes Film Festival and Sundance Film Festival in 1995 and 1997. This got the attention of Steven Spielberg and he wrote the role of Private Carparzo in Saving Private Ryan for Vin Diesel, in 1998. From this moment on, he's received the much due credit that he so rightfully deserves. |
