12th January 2002

Yes, indeedy do, Ladies and Germs - It's true, One More Cheer won't be updated for an entire year! Yet, so not worry, I will prepare for this year with other sites that are much better than this one you are on...I'll give you every essential site a Bette-fan needs. But first, let me explain my absence. In about 12 days I will be embarking on the biggest adventure of my life, to date. Little Ol' Rebecca from New Zealand will be going to the USA for a student exchange. Because this is the internet, I do not want to give my exact location for fear of one of those many internet weirdoes. I am going to New Jersey. There I do not want to be on the internet 24/7, instead I want to make the most out of my opportunity. Please pray for me in hope Bette decides to do a concert or 2 while I'm there. Actually I'm sure there are many out there who actually really don't care what I do, nor care that this 'stupid' website to them will not be updated for a year. Oh! Have you heard the news?! I am reading BETTE OR BUST! Read it! Get it! Now! See below for the beautiful banner I made...Seriously, It's a must for everyone. The temporary closure (I guess you could call it that?) means that I won't or will not have a huge chance of publishing the 'Dear Bettes'. I will check my email often though, but I don't think I'll be able to put them on the webpage. Instead I suggest you put it in the guestbook. Now for the Bette stuff:

So you have a very *important* question about Bette (i.e., Is she performing? What movie does she play blah blah in etc) and because I'm not updating anymore you can't find it here, well here are some various websites you can go to.

Post a message at the Official Bette Midler Club. You will almost definitely get a reply, and the people at this club know almost everything about Bette. You will receive a very detailed answer.

Delve into the Divine & Experience the Divine. Both owners will be able to answer your question.

Okay, you want to know the lyrics to a Bette song? EASY! go to Bette Lyrics! Infact, I get all my lyrics from there, for an example the lyrics at the top of the page 'Everything's coming up roses' was from there.

A very in-depth site about Bette, with a detailed biography is at Bette Chive. Go there!

And lastly, visit the Official website for the book 'Bette Or Bust'. It's just too divine. It's written by two girls who go on one hell of an adventure to see Bette.

Now, I will say my goodbyes. THANK YOU everyone who has ever emailed me or signed my guestbook and said something positive about my website. Thank you Bette - for unconsciously being there so I can make my website and most of all enjoy everything you do. There's NOBODY ELSE like BETTE MIDLER. THE QUEEN OF ALL THINGS.

28th November 2001

FINALLY! AN UPDATE!

Yes! Here I am - Back from reality and real life! Actually, sometimes the internet and it's make believe little world beats reality hands down. Anyway the reason you're here is too read about Bette and what she's been up to. Not what I've been up to. Okay well I've missed out on some of Bette's most important events this year, so I apologize now. There's been so many that I've missed most articles on yahoo etc, so I've had to surf around the most dominant Bette sites on the web and steal their trusty news! They are Delve into the Divine, Experience the Divine and while I'm listing good sites I want to say go to Bettedom!!! [Bettedom webmaster: If you're reading this I got your email and THANKS for your understanding, I shall email you back ASP]. Click on those links and they'll open up a new browser for you, so you can still stay here! Yay!

Wheww, time for a new paragraph. Oh, look at all that writing and I still haven't gotten around to sharing Bette news with ya'll. Okay so here goes [ note: these are quick summaries and I wish I could give all the news to you, but, the fact is I'm only human.]

i) Bye Bye All Girls Production

Yes, Bette and Bonnie Bruckheimer have decided that their will no longer be The All Girls Production. Over their 16 years of existence The AGP have produced many of our favorite Bette films, the first being Beaches. Their last project 'The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya sisterhood' should be released in the near future (see below for an article or two). Bonnie said that the split was amicable.

ii) Hulaween V

Yes, Bette's 5th Annual Halloween Ball took place on the 29th of October. This year it raised funds in honor for the people of New York City. The tickets began at $1000 and Bette performed throughout the night. I have yet to see any photos of the occasion! People! Come on, give me an address for some photos, pleassseeee - I know there has to be some Bette fan out there who knows a site with photos!

iii) Bette Performing

Well, I'm late but here is a list of the places Bette performed:

-'United We Stand' benefit concert for NYC at the RFK stadium, Washington on October 21st. She sung 'From a Distance', 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy' and 'Wind Beneath my Wings'

- Sung 'Wind Beneath my WIngs' in Boston shortly after the September 11th Tragedy.

-Prayer Service at Yankee Stadium 'From a Distance' and 'Wind beneath my Wings' on December 26th

18th October

Ohhhh...here is a divine bit of Bette stuff from Liz Smith October the 17th article from http://nypost.com

.....I WAS kidding around with Bette Midler this week, reminding her she moved to New York from L.A. after several devastating earthquakes. Bette laughed, "Yes, but we had eight or nine great years here!" Then she turned serious, making it apparent she is in New York to stay. "You know," she said, "Americans are the most generous people on God's earth. And we will all come through this. We must go on like the mayor says we must. Nothing has ever thrilled me like being asked to sing at Yankee Stadium; that meant the world to me."

Bette, who is definitely the wind beneath our wings, is putting on her annual Hula-ween. This year it's at the Marriott Marquis but it will change its name to suit the times.

"We're calling it 'New York, New York' because we felt we couldn't just dress up silly for Halloween. It happens Oct. 29 and, frankly, I know this charity is needed now more than ever. The Parks Department has taken a 15 percent cut in its budget, so our New York Restoration Project is more important than ever. We have been restoring and fixing up New York for years!"....

14th October

First of All, I have to say that I am devastated about the attack on New York and Washington. I am deeply saddened and all I can do Is support those have been affected. I myself was a mess when I learnt about it as well as all of those around me. We live in New Zealand and I can't imagine what it would be like to be in New York at the moment. - God Bless all of those in America and especially all those who knew someone in the tragedy.  I have had a few e-mails from various people asking if Bette and family were okay; they are, I don't know the details but all is well for them.

Midler helps rising star attend UCLA

Betsy Powell
ENTERTAINMENT REPORTER

Divine intervention is taking Toronto's Stephen Fakiyesi to the next phase in his flourishing artistic career. Next month, the 31-year-old visual artist is headed to UCLA's prestigious School of the Arts and Architecture where he'll study for his master's of fine arts. He almost turned down the coveted offer, extended to only a handful of students each year. Why? UCLA had awarded Fakiyesi a fellowship of $3,000 (all figures U.S.), but it wasn't enough to cover the $15,000 that tuition and living expenses will cost.

"I didn't have the money,'' says the 31-year-old, who works by day in the financial services industry. ``I informed them that although it was one of my top choices of schools I wouldn't be attending.'' He soon got a call from UCLA art professor Roger Herman. "He asked me if I could hold off because he was working on something that might interest me,'' Fakiyesi explains. It turned out his intervention came by way of the Divine Miss M. "(Herman) told me the money was coming from Bette Midler,'' he says. ``I get a lot of people singing to me (her song) `The Wind Beneath My Wings,' '' he adds, bursting into laughter. Fakiyesi was told that Herman, head of the school's painting and drawing department, had approached Midler, who is a friend. Midler was not familiar with Fakiyesi, so Herman pointed her in the direction of the artist's work posted on the Internet. The flamboyant singer and actress was, apparently, impressed by what she saw and agreed to put up $20,000 of her own money. Fakiyesi feels ``blessed and grateful,'' but has yet to meet his benefactress. He hopes to when he's in Los Angeles.``I sent her a thank-you note and hopefully I'll get to see her and present her with a piece of work,'' says Fakiyesi, who graduated with a B.A. in art and art history from the Sheridan College/Erindale College joint arts program in 1994 and who had offers from five universities including the University of Illinois in Chicago.

Jennifer Blankenship of UCLA's arts and architecture development office said yesterday that Fakiyesi is the first recipient of the Bette Midler Scholarship. ``We're glad he can have this support,'' she said, adding the award will be permanent and available to other students starting next year. Fakiyesi's work has been exhibited in spaces around Toronto, including Open Studio, the artist-run print making complex where he is currently a scholarship recipient, Mercer Union and, infamously, Hart House, where he caused a stir back in 1992 while still a student at the University of Toronto.

"Somebody tore my piece down from the walls,'' says Fakiyesi, balancing his large frame on a tiny stool in Open Studio's King and Spadina digs. ``I guess they didn't understand the work.'' It was a comment on violence by blacks against blacks and showed one man holding up two others at gunpoint. Fakiyesi doesn't consider himself a provocateur. His graffiti-styled, floor-to-ceiling woodblock prints deal with socio-political issues such as race, class and religion. More specifically, he has drawn inspiration from his spiritual conversion and by high-profile police shootings in Toronto. Art has been a life-long labour of love, he says, nurtured at Northern Secondary School (``It was definitely a great place to develop as an artist''), where he also played offensive lineman on the school's football team. In a letter of reference to UCLA's graduate studies selection committee, one of his university instructors, Sandra Rechico, described Fakiyesi as ``one of the (program's) outstanding graduates.'' She noted that his work in university approached issues of racial injustice suffered by young African Canadians, ``a difficult subject for a young artist to address,'' she wrote. "I admired his ability to carry out his ideas without the typical didacticness his peers often struggled with. As a young artist in the Toronto community, he's continued to give these issues their due with poetic subtleties, which does not undermine their serious content.'' Rechico said in an interview she's thrilled for her former student. ``He really deserves it.''

After graduation, Fakiyesi - who moved to Toronto from Nigeria in 1975 - spent three years as a visiting artist with the Toronto Board of Education. "I travelled throughout the city doing art appreciation with elementary-aged school kids.''Fakiyesi is a member of the FuturO Collective, a group of five African Canadian artists, including his sister, photographer Stella Fakiyesi. The collective is featuring its first group exhibit on Sept. 13 at SOF Art House at 688 Richmond St. W. In California, Fakiyesi will be enrolled in a three-year program. Funding beyond his Midler-backed first year is up in the air, but he's arranged to stay with some fellow parishioners. ``The church I belong to here has an affilate church there. I'll be staying with them.'' He's hopeful that a Master's degree, especially one from UCLA, will pave the way to an academic career. ``I'd like to probably be a professor somewhere, maybe U of T, who knows,'' he says with a bright smile.

30th July 2001 (a month later!)

Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry for the lack of updates! School now plays a major part in my life ;) On the Bette front, nothing much (we know) is going on in terms of movies, tours, CDs. I think I did hear that Bette was seen with Sophie (her daughter) in Italy! I do update 'Dear Bette' whenever I receive a submission. But most of the 'under construction' pages on the website have been put on hold. I'm still here though - and I do check my mail daily!

-Miss Rebecca

24th June 2001

Updated- 'Dear Bette' check it out! 'Divine Fans' and a new page 'Past Projects in Perspective'

16th June 2001

Hello! Well, I may as well update you on Bette's success on 'IN THESE SHOES' - It has moved up from 14th to 12th on it's 8th week on the Billboard music charts! Also (Thanks to The B. M Webpage for this info.) Hulaween in coming up, on the 29th of October.  Call them now at (212) 258-2333 and order for more info.

As you may (or may have not) noticed I've been doing a few updates here and there. I've made the Fans page a little bit bette-r. I also wanted to post this, It's not really Bette related, but It is her company (The All Girls Prod. ) that is making Rebecca Well's book, 'The Divine Secrets of the Ya-ya sisterhood.' Bonnie Bruckheimer recently posted this message at the Ya-Ya forum (Link is on 'We Love Bette' page) Here It is:

Good morning YaYa's...When 1Ethel mentioned to me that she was in touch with you all, I thought it was a great opportunity to say hello and give you an update on the film. Also, I received a letter from Rebecca yesterday, so it was doubly destined. I'm in the middle of one of the greatest experiences of my life, watching this amazing book unfold into a beautiful film. As you can imagine, a dream that I started dreaming four years ago when Bette Midler (my partner) and I optioned the book, is coming true, butin a fashion that I could only imagine in my wildest dreams. Callie Khouri was born to direct this film and I am so blessed that she chose this as her first directorial effort. Her vision of the movie was so much in tune with ours that I trusted her from our first meeting. The cast is extraordinary and experiencing these women portray the characters that we all know and love is sublime. We're on our fourth leg of the movie, which started with the little YaYa's (Vivi, Teensy, Caro and Necie) as young girls. Then Ashley Judd joined us, as younger Vivi, and I must say she gave us what I think is the finest performance of her career. Watching her dive into Spring Creek to 'save' Sidda, with all her beauty and grace, is a sight I'll never forget. My nine year old daughter got to play a Petite YaYa...which was a thrill for both of us. The younger YaYa's joined us and they are an hysterical group of girls. They added so much to these characters because they are naturally funny women. Seeing each group leave was very sad but we got to welcome the new crop, including Ellen Burstyn, Maggie Smith, Shirley Knight and Finoula Flannagan...the most prestigious group of actresses to be assembled in a long time. We're totally in awe of them but, believe it or not, they're just a 'regular' group of gals who love to laugh and have fun, even in the 100 degree heat and 100% humidity we're experiencing now...it is the South after all. The olive in the martini was the arrival of Sandy Bullock, our dream Sidda. You're gonna love her. She's perfect. The scenes with she and James Garner as Shep will leave you breathless. I am the luckiest girl in the world and I thank God every day for this amazing experience. Even though we haven't been in touch....16 hour days don't give you a lot of spare time... please know that we plan to include you all in the celebration of bringing "The Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood" to the screen. The adaptation of a book to a movie is always a difficult endeavor, especially one that is so beloved. I promise you, you will not be disappointed, but will be overjoyed at the result. 84,000 Blessings.

With love,
Bonnie Bruckheimer

31st May

It's been a while, but nothing much has happened, so to speak. The site has had a few updates now and then with new pages added, like 'Dear Bette' and the Trivia section. That's it though.  Oh, I was on the bus today and another bus was in front of me. Guess who was on the back of that bus? Bette, of course! It was advertising 'Bette' the TV show, and It has just started. Fancy that ~ Bette on the back of a bus in New Zealand!

Midler cancels million-dollar book
By JAM! Books

Bette Midler has canceled "Canceled," her account of being canceled on
network television.

New York's Daily News reports that despite signing a $1 million deal with
Simon & Schuster to tell the story of her eponymous CBS sitcom's creation and
eventual failure, Midler has now called off the project.

The Daily News said sources close to the project say both Simon & Schuster
and CBS are owned by Viacom, and Midler's desire to let loose on the
network's handling of the show would have made for some uncomfortable moments
for the publisher, the network, and the parent company.

But look on the bright side ~ One More Cheer has a new page! The fan page! It's FABULOUS, and all made by the fans of Bette...please check it out!  I have mid-year exams coming up this week, so updates won't be as regular / might not be any at all! Very sorry ;)

5th May 2001

Helloooo people. Here I am again (like anyone actually cares or bothers to read this)  In Bette news, Bette has found a new agent! You go girl! yeah! Hopefully it's better than the last. Click HERE for the article. Also 'In These Shoes' has been released with a divine cover. Ya want it? Ya got it:

30th April

Wow, so much has happened in the past week! We have had a lots of our questions answered with a recent chat Bette has had (I didn't even know about it! I was away for 2 days and came back and ta da!)   I'm also working on the gallery, but that may take a little while. I made a start on the NYRP page but at the moment it's just the structure and basic outline. I'll add more content soon.  Oh, I also stumbled across a better article about her book, then the one below.

April 26, 2001
Midler Between the Covers

Bette Midler isn't mad about last month's cancellation of her CBS sitcom.
She's too busy getting even. PEOPLE reports that the Divine Miss M, 55, has
signed a $1 million-plus book deal with Simon & Schuster to write about the
travails of the axed show. "Canceled," as the tome (due this fall) will be
called, "will be big" an S&S rep tells the magazine. "Bette Midler is still
very popular." As are, it would seem, books by TV stars, no matter how long
their run. Fran Drescher, it was reported earlier this month, sold her
upcoming memoir, "Cancer Schmancer," to Warner Books in a world-rights deal
worth $1 million. (Warner Books, like PEOPLE, is part of AOL Time Warner.)

Also 'In these Shoes' is going to be released on May 15th....It's a great song...check out Cdnow

25th April

Thanks to Terri's experience the divine I learnt that Bette has/is writing a book about her TV show experience...here is a section of an article:

PART MIDLER SCHTICK and part self-conscious self-mockery (think Eggers, but with the show tunes), the book, titled “Canceled,” will be about her experiences on the ill-fated show: the creation, the production and the collapse.
Artist Management Group/Renaissance agent Alan Nevins negotiated the book deal with S&S publisher David Rosenthal. Though Nevins declined to elaborate, he said the project was a team effort with his business partner, Joel Gotler, and was made possible because of Gotler’s longtime relationship with Bruckheimer, who in turn has had a long association with Midler. Rosenthal could not be reached for comment; he and other S&S executives are at a sales conference.

In retrospect, it is not surprising that Midler had a difficult time with her show, “Bette,” which had huge buzz before its premiere but was a quick casualty to poor ratings. Those who read Lynn Hirschberg’s New York Times Magazine profile of the actress in October might have suspected that the show’s shelf-life was short: “I don’t know if I regret saying ‘Yes’ to doing this show,” Midler told Hirschberg in an interview before the show had even aired. Though she said she thought she might enjoy the experience of having her own TV show, she also complained to Hirschberg about the workload. “When they say this is a dream job, they lie, lie, lie,” she said...'

How am I meant to know if nobody signs my guestbook? Come on...do it for Bette (at least!) hehe

In Yahoo news I found this picture for y'all:

17th April

Do you like the new look? It took me AGE'S to do, so I hope you appreciate it. I've made the pages a bit more bette-ish and added some new stuff in. I got rid of the fan page because nobody was using it and instead I threw in the Miscellaneous page, which Is much better I think. Y'all have to go and visit Terri's Bette page, she got a new domain name which is worth celebrating! :) I was wondering If there is anybody out there who would like helping me with this website, just e-mail me

Also, Some new BETTE NEWS just in! The release of For The Boys has come out on DVD - Visit amazon or your nearest video store to get it! 12th April

To begin with this coming weekend is Easter, so I'm shipping outta the city and going North - to the beaches. The result of this action is no updates or Bette news for 4 whole days! I'm really really sick of the layout with those stupied black buttons, so I'm working on some frames. What else - ahhh yes, I did work on my new 'EXCLUSIVE TO OMC' Scanned page. It's pretty cheap at the moment and quite tacky, with the graphics and stuff, but beacuse it's not the graphics that make it worthwhile it's the content; I've decided to give you a quick preview.  So here's the link SCANNED. Remember it's not very good at the moment and you can be assured that when I'm back It'll be bette-r. Also Concerning Bette, there's not much 'news' out there, so my guess Is that she's just having a break..I'm also adding a few more links to the 'we love bette' page....Also tell me what you think about the beginning of my new domain - http://nzrebecca.com there's not much there, but there will be. ummmmm, what else should I say on my parting words? Why don't any of you use  'the essential fan' page - really, I'm going to take it down soon....okay, I'm off - HAPPY EASTER!

~Rebecca

6th April

Okay. Wow. I have just been surfing other celeb. websites. They are soooo good. It makes me want to go and change mine, which is pretty dumb since I just put it up. Hopefully tomorrow I'll scan in some articles ok - If not tomorrow, the next day. Please go and have a look at my sister site - Divine Madness, The Bette Midler Webpage and Nobody Else But Bette (all links under 'we love bette'. They are all really great and up to date (huh - that rhymes!). Today I watched 'That Old Feeling' it was FABULOUS, it always makes me laugh. So go rent it.

 5th April

I've just been doing some general housekeeping..sweeping up messy bits here and there. I added 'everything bette' because even though it's pretty boring info I thought some people may have use of it. I'm putting together a page with some articles in magazines I have collected over the years. Hopefully that will be successful :)

3rd April..

Just updated some stuff on the web..did a little bit of house cleaning here and there. I also forgot to mention that In These Shoes had made it # 4 on the Dance Club Charts.

2nd of Aril

So many things are happening at the moment. Here is a brief article not directly related to Bette but connected with The All Girls Prod...

Wilmington Morning Star
Copyright 2000 Wilmington Star-News
Sandra Bullock, Ashley Judd and Ellen Burstyn (Requiem for a Dream, The Spitfire Grill) are set to star in the upcoming feature, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, which is based on the popular novel by Rebecca Wells.
The movie will be the directorial debut for Callie Khouri, who wrote Thelma & Louise and Something to Talk About.
The Louisiana-set movie is about female friendship and the relationship between a mother and daughter. It's scheduled to start filming in early April.

Also, ya'll remember STASEY (aka Bette Writer) well this legend has her new site up and running, have a look at www. staseywrites.com....I have to go but I'll post more as soon as possible..and many kisses and hugs to all those divine people who send me e-mails! :)

1st April 2001

I'm feeling very discouraged after just putting my site on the web because of the complaints I'm getting. But I do like it when people who do point out my mistakes in a polite manner - That makes me feel much better. All I'm trying to do is make a fan page for Bette's fans..so there we are. Hopefully it'll get bette-r!

30th March 2001

Well, I'm still working on it, in fact it's not even on the net yet...But If you're reading it, it must be! Just to explain- this is a page where I put updates and news. Whenever I update my page I'll probably add a quick note here. I have been surfing other Bette pages and am noticing that because of the lack of news about Bette the webmasters aren't updating as often. I want to know what people think of my new page so pleaseeeeeeeee tell me in my guestbook okay?

On the fan front, we all know that 'Bette' was cancelled after only 18 episodes. But It was divine when it lasted. This summer Bette plans to put her feat up and have a big rest. I don't blame her! Bette is currently NOT touring and I think that if there is a next tour it will be a while away. Bette's company, The All Girl Productions are finally making 'The Divine Sisters of the Ya-Ya sisterhood" into a movie The book is by Rebecca Wells and I highly recommend it. It is soooo great! Bette's new song 'In these Shoes' has also reached #4 on the DANCE CLUB charts. Well, that's about it I'm afraid. Be sure to come back to this page. Enjoy the rest of my site. Signing off - Rebecca.
