General
French was well known when he relieved Kimberley on 15 February 1900.
At
the same time the British forces managed to corner
General
Piet Cronje on the banks of the Modder River near Paardeberg.
Some of General JDP French's commands were as follows
Thursday
2nd November 1899 - French escapes on the last train after
Whites
Forces besiged at Ladysmith.
Monday
20th November 1899 - Lieutenant-General J.D.P. French
Commanding
Cavalry, arrives at Noupoort. He was sent there to protect the
railway
line by General Buller to prevent the advance into Cape Colony.
9th December 1899 - General French advances to Arundel.
December 30th 1899 - General French finds new headquarters at Rensburg.
January
31st - February 5th - General French begins withdrawing the
cavalry
regiments.
15th
February 1900 - News came through that General French
had
in fact relieved Kimberley.
