My Mother Scares Me

Mom called earlier with a question about baking, and the conversation went something like this:

"Well, I was wondering if it's a secret that something you are baking is done when you first start to smell it?"

"What???"

"Well, I'm noticing that if I wait too long to take the cookies out of the oven after I start to smell them, they end up burnt".

"Are you checking them when the timer goes off?"

"Yes, but they don't look done, but the next time I check them they are burnt."

"How long before you check them again?"

"Just a few minutes, but I noticed that I start to smell them right after I check them the first time."

"So, you start to smell them right after you open the oven door?"

"Yes, but the next time I check them, they are burnt."

"I see..."

I should have stopped the conversation at this point, and just said, "Yes, the cookies are done when you smell them", but, no...

"...well the cookies are going to continue to cook for a minute, so you should take them out when they look almost done. Something like bread or a cake you would check for dough with a toothpick, but cookies don't need to cook too long. Actually, they're better if there a little chewy."

"I would think that they would be chewier if you cooked them longer."

"No, they would be hard and crunchy".

"You mean hard and chewy?"

"I mean hard and crunchy."

"If they're crunchy, they're going to be chewy."

"If they're chewy, they're going to be soft."

Pause

"Think chewy like bubblegum."

"Oh, I get it."

"OK, I've gotta run. Do you have cookies in the oven now?"

"Yes"

"Can you smell them?"
