Annotated Bibliography:  The Untold Reality Behind Academic Advising

Al-Mannie, Mohammed A.  “Students Perception of Academic Counseling at the King Saud University, Saudi Arabia”.  International Review Education, Vol. 35, No. 2.  (1898), pp. 229-234.  This research article test the difficulties of academic advising at the King Saud University in Saudi Arabia.  Al-Mannie’s investigation indicates the problems that may cause academic advising to be unsuccessful and gives the statistics to support the assumptions made throughout the article.

Cooper, William E, Fobian, Cynthia S.  “Long-Range Course Planning by College Students”.  Higher Education, Vol. 16, No. 1.  (1987), pp. 95-102.  Copper and Fobian’s experiment analyzes the correlation between college students having a long-term goal and committing to the career.  The research article clarifies that when a college students prepares long-term goals, he or she will commit to the career of his or her choice.

Davis, James Earl.  “College in Black and White: Campus Environment and Academic Achievement of African American Males”.  The Journal of Negro Education, Vol. 63, No. 4, Pedagogical and Contextual Issues Affecting African American Males in School and Society.  (Autumn, 1994), pp. 620-633.  This research article that will emphasize the fact that a college or universities’ contribution to their students will beings affects how well the student body performs academically.

Gaw, Esther Allen.  “Advising Mean Administration”.  The Journal of Higher Education, Vol. 4, No. 4.  (Apr., 1933), pp. 179-186.  This journal article indicates the true definition of an academic adviser.  Gaw thoroughly illustrates what is to be done in order for an adviser to effectively help his or her advisees.

Mortenson, Gary C.  “But It’s Not in My Job Description’: The Varied Roles of College Teachers”.  Music Educators Journal, Vol. 74, No. 9.  (May, 1988), pp. 26-30.  This journal article clarifies the job description of an extraordinary academic adviser, as well as, express the importance of an adviser taking his or her position seriously.

Raskin, Miriam.  “Critical Issue: Faculty Advising”.  Peabody Journal of Education, Vol. 56, No. 2, Issues and Trends in American Education. (Jan. 1979), pp. 99-108.  Raskin’s article identifies that fact that academic advising is a critical issue at numerous colleges and universities throughout the country.  It supports the thesis statement of my paper.

Walker White, Helen.  “Counseling Women Students”.  The Journal of Higher Education, Vol. 18, No. 6.  (Jun. 1947), pp. 312-316, 337-338.  Helen Walker White develops a general explanation of what academic advising should consist of from information gathered from fourteen women colleges.  This journal article will give examples of how academic advising at universities and colleges differ.

Wilder, Jerry R.  “Academic Advisement: An Untapped Resource”.  Peabody Journal of Education, Vol. 58, No. 4, Issues and Trends in American Education.  (Jul., 1981), pp. 188-192.  This journal article investigates the history of academic advising and its usefulness in the past years.  Wilder’s article will give evidence of the fact that academic advising has been an ongoing issue and examples of ways to correct the problem.
