OUTLINE:  The Untold Reality Behind Academic Advising

Purpose:  To demonstrate that academic advising is important, however, certain critique should be implemented for those being advised.

Thesis:  Academic advising has been proven to be successful, however, due to overpopulation of college and universities have been less successful than statistically proven.  

Audience:  My instructor, current college and university faculty, as well as, students and anyone concerned about academic advising.

I.                    Introduction

II.                  Description of an academic adviser

a.      definition

1.      dictionary definition

b.      job duties

1.      keep record of students before and after meeting

2.      meet with students each semester

3.      familiarity with catalog requirements to ensure degrees provided by institution

c.      importance

1.      dealing with someone’s educational future

2.      give students security with their college experience

III.                Past problems with academic advising

a.      poor performance of advisers

1.      not taking task seriously

2.      disassociating oneself from the student

b.      overflow of students

1.      too many students with limited amount of advisers and time

2.      unorganized advisement meetings

IV.               Methods to improve academic advisement

a.      adviser proportional to student body

1.      have adviser for specific degree plans

2.      the need for advisers declared by the number of enrollment

b.      limit requirement for advisement

1.      not all students body should be required for advisement
