With the Grain and Against the Grain

With the grain::

Coming to college made me realize how teenagers really do get out of the house and go crazy. The fads of piercing and tattooing the body is probably the biggest thing I see being done in the college scenery. Knowing that a tattoo parlor is less than three blocks away from the school probably has something to do with it also. However, being legally able to get one and knowing that the person’s parents would probably not allow it seems to be the actual reasoning behind the tattoo or piercing. “On Teenagers and Tattoos”, Andres Martin, M.D. gives the many reasons psychologist and such have come up with for teenagers getting tattoos on their bodies.

Against the grain:

Not all teenagers worry about what someone else is doing. Getting tattoos should not necessarily be considered another “fad” simply because not everyone gets them for popularity. I have seen several tattoos done because of the death of a loved one or to remember a specific time period or event. Some people decide to get tattoos to express themselves. People were close a certain way to express themselves, it’s the same principle.
