| Arrangement—ordering your discourse or organization Confirmation—arguing a claim Delivery—presenting your ideas in various ways, using several types of media Diction—appropriate word choice Ethos—trustworthiness of the speaker/writer, an effective persuasive strategy because when the reader believes the speaker do not intend to harm him or her, she or he is willing to listen to what the author says Exordium—an introduction to make the audience attentive and receptive Figures—parallelism, antithesis, inversion, repetition Grammar conventions—“correctness” Invention—coming up with ideas or brainstorming Kairos—seizing the moment, being aware of the rhetorical situation; culture, time, and place Logos—broader idea than formal logic, highly symbolic and mathematical logical that might be studied in a philosophy course, attempt to appeal to the intellect Media—paper, web pages, video, audio Memory—more than mere memorization, making your work memorable Narratio—making a claim Oral presentation—speaking from memory of reading paper Page design—choice of fonts type or style; font size and page layout Pathos—relate to the words pathetic, sympathy, and empathy, accepting a claim based on how it makes you feel without fully analyzing the rationale behind the claim Peroratio—concluding appropriately Pisteis—ways to persuade, either invented or discovered Refutatio—meeting counter-arguments Sentence-structure—four sentence patterns; loose and periodic sentences Stasis—asking the right questions, usually related to fact, definition, value, and policy Style—saying or writing things well, word choice, audience appropriateness Topoi—places to look for an argument Tropes—metaphor and simile, synecdoche and metonymy, hyperbole, rhetorical questions, litotes, irony, oxymoron Visual design—the way you choose to use graphics and text |
