Book of Words Review

Jack is the eponimous baker's boy. One day, because he fell asleep and burnt some bread, he discovers he has strong powers of sorcery. He also comes to the attention of the powerful and extremely evil Baralis. Escaping from Baralis, he comes across Meliandra, who is also escaping something. While they are hiding, Meli is kidnapped. Jack joins forces with Tawl, a former Knight of Valdis to get her back. On the way, Jack learns more about himself and fights to control his gifts and keep Meli safe. Meanwhile, back at the castle, Baralis is plotting. He wants the throne for himself, and because of a plan he put into motion on the same day Jack was born, he knows how to get it...

Sword of Shadows Review

In 'A Cavern of Black Ice', we meet Raif Severance. Holder of the Raven Lore, he and his brother survived a vicious attack that had killed their father and their clan chief. Raif is grief-stricken and finds that he cannot accept the new chief so when his uncle, the Ranger Angus Lok, invites him to accompany him to Spire Vanis, Raif jumps at the chance.

Things get hairier at Spire Vanis, as Angus Lok has helped a young girl called Asarhia March to escape the city and her foster-father, the Surlord Pentharo Iss. Raif soon finds it is up to him and his extraordinary gifts to protect Ash - and the world - from the forces growing within her and the only way he can do that is to take her to the Cavern of Black Ice.

In 'A Fortress of Grey Ice', Ash and Raif are journeying back from the cavern when they are separated. Ash accompanies two Sull fariders to their homelands and learns many things about herself on the way, while Raif gets himself into more trouble when he takes it on himself to find the Maimed Men.

Things are not going well for a lot of people in Spire Vanis and the Clanlands. Pentharo Iss is looking for Ash, and Crope is looking for his master. Vaylo Bludd is losing control of both his sons and his clan, Robbie Dhoone is getting too big for his boots, and back at the Blackhail clanhold, things are getting worse. The new chief is bringing Scarpe clansmen into the clanhold for some unknown reason, and seems to have it in for Effie Severance Raif's younger sister. Can Raina save her and the clan in time? And just what is Raif's mission at the Fortress of Grey Ice?
