'...If you think of Deverry as a stage play, the sets of books make up its acts.  Act One consists of the Deverry books proper,  that is, Daggerspell, Darkspell, Dawnspell,  and Dragonspell.  The 'Westlands' books, A Time of Exile,  A Time of Omens,  A Time of War and A Time of Justice make up Act Two, while Act Three will unfold in the current series, 'The Dragon Mage,'  that is, The Red Wyvern, The Black Raven,  and The Fire Dragon.  The Gold Falcon will bring the sequence to its end at last.
As for the way that the series alternates between past and present lives, think of the structure of a line of Celtic interlace.....,...
The past incarnations of the characters in this book and their present tense story really are one continous line,  but this line interweaves to form the individual volumes.  Eventually - soon I hope - the pattern will complete itself and you will be able to see that the set of books forms a circle of knots.
The Deverry Cycle
Prince Galrion doesn't want to be King, he wants to study the dweomer.  This would be fine if it didn't mean that he would have to give up his place in court and his betrothed Brangwen didn't have to forsake her privileged life.  She doesn't mind, but his Father the King does.  He banishes him, and as a final humiliation, changes his name to Nevyn, which in Deverry-speak means no-one.  Brangwen's brother Gerraent of the Falcon and his best friend Blaen of the Boar start a feud over her and to cut a long story short, all three end up dead.  To make amends, Nevyn, who is already strong in the dweomer makes a bargain with the High Lords that he will not rest until he has made it up with the souls of all three of his friends.
This is how the Deverry Cycle began.  Through the next four hundred years or thereabouts, Nevyn follows Brangwen's soul as it is re-born into different incarnations through the years.  He usually finds the souls of Gerraent and Blaen nearby too, their fates twisted together with his love's.
It is 1063 and Brangwen, Gerraent and Blaen have been reborn as Jill, Rhodry Maelwyddyn and Cullyn the silver dagger and Jill's father.  Nevyn eventually finds all three of them and begins to train Jill in the dweomer, hoping that this incarnation will be the one that frees his Wyrd and lets him rest.  All this plus having to defend Deverry against the Masters of the Dark Dweomer keeps poor old Nevyn a very busy man.
The Westlands Cycle and the Dragon Mage stories are all set within the timeframe of the Deverry Cycle which is why it seems so complicated to read.  Various other characters such as Salamander and Aderyn as well as the various incarnations of the main characters lead the reader on a merry dance through the lands of Deverry and the Westlands, not to mention the Bardek Islands.
