Apart from The Hobbit, this is without doubt the greatest fantasy series written specifically for children, containing many close analogies to the Bible, ( the creation, the expulsion from Paradise, the crucifixion etc ) .  Reading The Magician's Nephew gives the distinct impression to an older reader that no good comes from dark magic.
It all started one bright sunny day, when Digory Kirk climbed over Polly Plummer's wall,  the wall that separated their gardens on a street in post World War I London...  What happened next influenced the whole future of a brand new world, as well as the two children.
The adventure continues in the later years of World War II and beyond, as six more children are caught up in the history of Narnia.
Because of the difference in the way time runs in Narnia, the whole history can be compressed into about 60 earth-years,  so all eight of the children are alive to witness the end of Narnia.
